608245 2007-11-04 21:33:00 On another aspect what could I do to possibly repair the fan?

www.imagef1.net.nz (sorry for the **** photo, seems the best I can do)

On first inspection the negative wire had come off (dry joint caused by heat from GPU?), but resoldering both wires had no effect

Resistance across whole fan reads about 1400K ohm (normal 80mm case fan was 400K)

the SMD resistor checked out fine at 47 ohm

Both windings seem to check fine at 54 ohm each

12v goes into the little 4-pin IC (or whatever it is, part number 276 609Gh, couldn't find it in google) on the pin furthest away from you in the photo, but nothing can be measured on any other pin. Not sure if that's a problem but as the 2 middle pins connect to 2 of the 4 wires coming from the windings, it might be.

I thought it might be some kind of magnetic sensor for RPM, but as the track for the RPM wire goes nowhere except to where it looks a transistor should be, I guess not.

apart from heat or just normal failure, my only other theory is that the bad negative connection somehow (how?, don't know) destroyed the IC

Anyone think of anything I might have missed?? (or If I'm completely off track)

608246 2007-11-04 21:48:00 Doesn't the entire fan assembly just unscrew off the heatsink? You could then just go for a replacement fan in its own chassis. SolMiester (139)

The fan does unscrew from the heatsink but doesn't have a chassis (or very minimal) it looks just like the one on the directron website, and mounts onto the heatsink with 3 screws on the underside.

608248 2008-07-08 04:22:00 Just for future readers of this post:

I have an ASUS x800xt video card that has a dead fan. When I called the RMA department and told them about it they told me their policy is to send out one replacement fan per serial number free of charge! (just the fan, not the whole heatsink/fan assembly) :clap

That's right, one replacement fan for free per card if it's an ASUS brand card.

Hope that helps someone...

Given that it's neither Asus, nor x800xT Series.

I don't know.
