608993 2007-11-07 01:36:00 My OS was installed in 2003/4. Was the OS upgraded with each release and if so would the last XP edition be much different?. I am not quite sure what SP1 amended?. Thanks. Pato (2463)

608996 2007-11-07 01:56:00 What question?

SP1 or 2 are mainly bugfixes / patches.

Not a whole new OS like Vista

XP looks exactly the same, with or without SP1 or 2.

SP2 just added the Wireless network setup wizard. And fixed bugs.

SP1 or 2 are mainly bugfixes / patches .

I have always thought that SP2 was pretty much a re-write of XP . . . and with the Pro version, it's a lot more intrusive to the original XP-Pro without SP-2 .

It (SP2) took a long time to install and there was a lot of HDD grinding and read-write going on while it happened .

There are some minor differences in the Home version, but with the encryption capacity in Pro, there had to be quite a few changes . . . as written by M$ about the changes at the time .

It was not totally about security . . . although that was a lot of the changes .

Remember that M$ was trying to invoke some of the newer digitally signed and newly-authorized applications and since the inception of the original OE release of XP there had been a slew of new hardware and devices that sought and got approval by M$ and some of these drivers were inserted into the never ending list of bloat that M$ felt necessary to make the installation of such PnP devices easy .

It was also a change in the way certain "calls" (damn, that's an old-fashioned term . . sorry) to the system were made and the storage of files and commands in the OPSYS had new areas created for those purposes . Networking problems were corrected and/or changed and also some PnP things were modified .

New lines and entries in the registry were added and some deleted as they had the propensity to leave certain ports opened or unguarded .

A firewall was added . . . the "BIG" security system was invoked . . . . . some rendering engines were changed or put on a RAM diet . . . (told to me by my son) . . . . . and there were some doors closed and others opened for M$ to add/delete things like WGA, QOS, Dr . Whatshisname with new powers, other "Nazis-In-Your-OPSYS" . . .

. . . . and if I remember correctly, IE was also updated too .

In the more noticeable arena: The word "Professional" does NOT appear in the XP load/splash screen when SP-2 is installed . There are other things that run under the radar for most SYSOPS . . . but maybe it's best that they don't know/realize it either .

608999 2007-11-07 03:04:00 Thanks to you both. That is what I was after. A friend is doing a basic computer course using XP. She reckons, for example, their Windows Explorer has an extra
Toolbar and Status Bar. Also, she can do a virus scan from Explorer and other subtle differences. I thought they may be using Vista or that later versions of XP may be different. Just curious.

Oops! I meant SP2 in my original query.

609000 2007-11-07 03:19:00 If an anti-virus program is installed, it'll let you scan whatever from within my computer.

Most AV programs do this.

And the extra toolbar / status bar is most probably some other program.

That she installed. Some programs will install / put extra toolbars in IE or my computer.

Well, yup SP2 will take a while to install its 266 mb.

Wait for SP3. Thats most probably 300-330mb! As it'll install files similar to Vista's.

For the network.

But youre right SJ, you could call SP2 a whole new OS.
