608875 2007-11-06 19:37:00 What do modern motherboards use in place of the old PCI Slot?
Why the shortage on new boards of PCI?

I have an old board (ASUS P4C800 Deluxe, Socket 478) 5x PCI Expansion Slots all currently full. If I move to a modern board I can do away with two of them but not all of them.

608876 2007-11-06 19:53:00 A full size ATX board should still have at least 3 PCI slots.
mATX usually have two.

PCI-Express 1x slots are slowly taking over the old PCI slots but there still aren't a lot of cards available for PCIE 1x slots so PCI is hanging in there.

Of cause if you get an SLI board then the second PCI-Express 8x/16x slot takes up another space.

608877 2007-11-06 19:59:00 Because PCI is becoming obsolete. So is 478 / 754 pin.

And a few mobos coming out now, dont have parallel ports either.

608879 2007-11-06 20:27:00 I would only get ASUS or maybe a Gigabyte.
Just looking at the Asus P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n which I have not checked to see if I can get it in NZ, not that is a problem.

It has 2 PCI's which will at least hold my 2 Hauppage cards.

Just need to add ram, cpu and a graphic card I guess. My Thermaltake Armour case is more than sufficient to hold a new board.

I have no need for serial, parallel, PS2 or floppy drive anymore.

My HDD's are a mix of SATA and IDE but the IDE's can go on one of the other PC's.

What ever I get it will be old technology the day after I get it:-)

608882 2007-11-07 19:59:00 Modern motherboards have most things you would have previously plugged into PCI slots onboard, so there is no need for a lot of PCI slots.

What do you have plugged in that requires 5 PCI slots??

Currently 2 Promise cards, one additional 3 port firewire card and 2 Hauppage cards.

The promise cards allow me to run an extra 4 ATA133 Hard drives/devices off one card and 4 SATA drives/devices off the other. Currently have 7 Hard Drives, a CD Drive and DVD-DL burner hooked up. Plus a couple of external Firewire HDD's for backup.

New motherboard would have extra SATA, USB and Firewire ports so probably three cards could go.
