609760 2007-11-09 04:33:00 Hi Team

I just updated to CC V2.02.527 and see it now has a registry cleaner function. Has anybody used this, and is it safe/reliable?

I have a current registry backup of course, but I'd rather not go there!

Running W2K (because I like it, OK?).

Cheers

609761 2007-11-09 04:41:00 errrrrrrrrrr...........ccleaner always did have a reg clean function it's under 'issues'.....they just renamed it..... drcspy (146)
609762 2007-11-09 04:46:00 I used to use it every now & then with no problems. I try & discard a lot of freebies and demos & it cleans out the registry junk from those apparently.

However, the opinion here a while ago seemed to be that any reg cleaner can potentially make a mess, and the benefits are marginal. Try & see I guess - ccleaner will ask you to make a registry backup before it does anything.

609763 2007-11-09 05:19:00 Been using the Wise reg cleaner from the mag disc and seems to work ok after making a backup first. It does this every time I run it, am running on 3 xp machines so far so good gary67 (56)

Um, its been there since the earliest versions I think . I run it atleast once a week and after every time I install/un-install a program . Keeps it nice and healthy without having to poke in the registry yourself . You have a backup too so no harm but if you do delete any entries, always say "yes" to the backup offered .

609765 2007-11-09 05:59:00 Thanks for that, I'll give it a burl. I never realised that the earlier versions had a reg cleaner, it must have been a little bit obscure because I've used the program for a long time. Mind you, habits form quickly and if I didn't spot it early I wasn't likely to trip over it in a hurry.

609766 2007-11-09 07:00:00 OK!!

Ran the CC Reg checker and it threw up about 350 items . I went through them line by line and deleted about 340 of them and noted the names of a few programs I wasn't sure about .

Everything seems to be working ok still and the only side effect was having to reconfirm one program as a default choice .

I guess my registry is a little smaller now!

I also ran the new version on my son's computer and removed 16,800 internet files (481MB) that had not been removed by previous clean outs . All of this was prompted by difficulties logging on to Gmail, flowing on from his Bebo exploits . . For some strange reason his problem crossed over to my computer when I tried to log on to his account and killed by PF1 account and that too was cured by updating Ccleaner .

As I anticipated, his decision to sign up cost me about 4 hours of my time to set up his Gmail account then cure its refusal to log on, then deal with the flow on to my computer .

I think I'll get him to mow the lawns with some nail-scissors this weekend .

Cheers

609768 2007-11-09 19:51:00 Its perfectly safe to use as it is cautious and leaves huge piles of crap behind in your registry. pctek (84)
