609012 2007-11-07 03:43:00 I recently bought a 320GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 . 10 16MB cache, SATA II NCQ hard drive .

The hard drive my OS is on at the moment is an IDE 80GB Western Digital 7200rpm 8mb cache hard drive .

Will transferring my OS to the new drive increase loading times and boot times etc?
My PC is compatible with SATA II 3gbit/s not just the original SATA 1 . 5gbit/s .

If it will make it faster, how do I transfer the OS over . I really do not want to do a clean install as this one is only about 2 months old and it's all setup perfect .

Also could someone point me in the direction of a program that will measure my HDD speed so I can confirm it is working at SATA II 3gbit/s not just ordinary SATA 1 . 5gbit/s .

Thanks in advance

609013 2007-11-07 03:53:00 just use any imageing program to copy the entirety of the system onto the new drive......norton ghost, acronis, .............and it'll maybe make it a bit faster drcspy (146)

Your drive will have a maximum sustained read speed of around 80MB/s which can easily be handled by SATA I

609015 2007-11-07 04:52:00 To transfer the OS use Seagate's own Disk Wizard software, its based around Acronis but is free when using Seagate HDD's.

Its available from here:

HDTACH will measure it .

But what revision firmware do you have? that particualar model HD is suppose to be one of the fastest . But there are discussions about a later firmware causing a massive slow down . Tests don't compare well with the first samples of this HD! anyone with 2 or more of these drives in raid format need to do some checking which revision of firmware they have .

google 7200 . 10 firmware . .

609017 2007-11-07 16:30:00 I find that copying files to SATA drives is definitely much faster than IDE drives.

But I cannot comment on OS loading, but I imagine that would also be faster.

609018 2007-11-08 01:10:00 SATA drives are stated as being faster so you would think that they would load faster too. I know my SATA HDD drive is definitely faster than my IDE one in the same machine gary67 (56)
609019 2007-11-08 04:02:00 I just discovered that i've got the AAK one which is slower

What are my options? Can I take it back?

609020 2007-11-08 05:09:00 Where are you located? The last story I read was that AAK weren't retail drives (ie were sold by Seagate to an OEM) but ended up being retailed by Newegg??? in the US.

Does the drive have the Seagate retail warranty when you check the serial on Seagate's site.

Your only option might depend on the retailer's policy.
