| 610000 | 2007-11-10 03:08:00 | I have a problem that I would really appreciate suggestions on . For 30 years I have run a home business which I am close to closing . I have had two phone lines with a PABX but when I close the business, I will relinquish one line, so before then, I want ADSL in place . I have a wire in filter which will go in before the PABX and a wireless router will fit nearby . My wifes computer is close so a short CAT5 cable will connect her but there is the complication with my computer . Before you ask, I need wireless for when my son and his wife visit as both use laptops and are heavy internet users . The complication is with my computer is in a seperate building and is about 20 metres straight line from where the Router will be so here are the options as I see them . 1 - Underground is not an option (concrete) so I could run a 25 to 30 meter length of CAT5 but 10 metres would have to be hung from a support wire and I would like to avoid this if possible as it is unsightly . 2 - Power Line Networking is an ideal option but cost and the possibility of electronic noise is a problem as I am a ham radio operator . 3 - This leaves wireless . Here the problem is that the house walls have Foil Insulation which is an effective shield . I could extend the antenna to under the soffit but then internal reception is a problem as the signal would have to get though the foil in reverse . 4 - I favor the NETGEAR DG834G router which is what my son uses at home . He has found the performance to be excellent and vastly better than the D-Link he had in the same location before it failed, but for about the same price I can get the BELKIN F5D9230AUF MIMO router . I wonder if an external antenna on one port and leaving the second one to provide coverage inside the house . It would not of couse work in MIMO mode but from what I know, they work equally as well as standard one like the NETGEAR in this mode . If anyone has any knowledge of this sort of use or any other suggestions given the above facts, I would be most grateful . |

Line of sight to the cottage means: - below the split level roof of our house, - to the right of the watertank - below the roof of the cottage - through the gable of the cottage (thus over the iron weatherboards - converted skyline garage) - and the receiver at the far end is hung half way up the wall. Can you position it so it is line of sight through a window? |
