610681 2007-11-11 23:07:00 Hi, I am a new member of these forums. After searching websites after another on how to reinstalling Windows ME (I need to refresh my system), I still come up short. So, as a result, I come to these forums, which supposed to be the livewire of PC problem solving.

I do not currently have a startup floppy disk, and as a result I downloaded a replacement from a website (not sure on the reliability or accuracy of the file).

I have the original Windows ME disk that came with the PC when I bought it.

If someone could please, please solve my problem, preferably told in a step by step procedure so I can finally have my computer fast and runnying and solving my frustration problems before I :badpc: .

Thanks alot for any attempt to help +:2cents:

610682 2007-11-11 23:15:00 use a win98 boot disk rather than a winme one it's got more functionality . . . . . .

start using the floppy and choose 'start with cdrom support' . . . . .
then at the a: prompt type in

format c:

then tap enter

WARNING; this will WIPE the drive . . . . . . . so you'll be VERY smart BEFOREHAND to have copies of your drivers etc for the video card/soundcard/modem etc . . . . . . . because the windows install may NOT include these, (it often doesn't) having done the format

type in E:

then tap enter . . . . . . . this *should* take you 'into' the cd . . . . . . . . . if not try D:

either way then you should then be able to access the setup files on the cd . . . .

then type in

dir

then tap enter

that'll show you a list of the files/folders . . . . . . .

type in

cd win9x

then tap enter

then type in

setup

then tap enter . . . . . . . . .

you better have your windows ME liscense key ready also . . . . . . . . . . good luck

610683 2007-11-11 23:16:00 Isnt the ME CD bootable??

Did you go into the BIOS and change the bootdisk to the CD??

Then put the CD in, reboot, to see if it boots?

If it does, you dont need a floppy to boot from.

Or if the cd came with it, wouldnt it be a restore cd / dvd?

610687 2007-11-12 00:13:00 With Windows ME I need to press a button to access that menu, I've accessed it before but have forgotten the button to press. Dc Nilbog (13019)
610688 2007-11-12 00:19:00 On all computers, you have to press a key.

It could be F2, F10, F11, or on most its the Delete key. To get into the BIOS

Thats after you reboot you press one of these keys.

610689 2007-11-12 00:24:00 Thank you Speedy Gonzales, I am at the BIOS screen now, what do? I do under 'Boot'? Dc Nilbog (13019)
610690 2007-11-12 00:30:00 You change it to the cd whatever it says there, then put the cd in then save the settings in the BIOS.

Then reboot. Then hopefully the cd boots. So u can reinstall Windows.

BUT, this may also depend on WHAT kind of cd it is.

If it came with the computer, it MAY NOT be the retail version of ME.

Does it say OEM on this cd, or anything like Recovery CD on it?

Did the hdd have a partition on it, to restore the system??

If it does / did, then it SHOULD tell u what F key to press, when you reboot (it might say press F10 or F12), or something to restore the system.

If it does, thats what u do. Not use the cd, and boot from it.
