610475 2007-11-11 03:59:00 Hi all

i have an annoying problem with vista... basically no matter what im doing, my pc freezes at random. During the freeze, i can move my mouse and sometimes still hear sound, but my pc doesnt respond to anything, not even ctl alt del...

after about 1-2 mins, my pc (somethimes) starts working again as if nothing happened.

One thing to note, is that when a freeze occurs, my hard drive light on the front of my pc does nothing, not even a flicka. And at the point my pc starts responding again, it starts flashing.

I have also had a few times where my comp hangs on the starting screen, and i have to restart.

My spec are.

intel 6600 dual core
2gig ddr2 800 ram
nvidia 8800 card

So i dont think its my specs...

any ideas??

thanks
Jase

610476 2007-11-11 04:06:00 By some chance are you using SATA hard Drive(s) and Optical Drive (s)

And what type of PC is it - one you constructed your self or a Name Brand ?

610479 2007-11-11 04:14:00 have a look at This forum Page (www.daniweb.com) Its to do with Dells but it may just be the same thing (post 7)

Basically if the HD is on SATA 0 and SATA Optical (CD / DVD Writer) on 1,2 then move the Optical to 4,5 or 6 depending on what board you have.

Just in case this doesn't work - what is the Mother Board you have.

610483 2007-11-11 05:08:00 Sorry for the delay in getting back, had to fire up the Vista PC to get this right
Open the Event Viewer.

Click on the start Orb, in the search area directly above the orb start typing in event look up near the top of the list of search results you will see Event Viewer.

Double click it, when it opens select & expand Windows Logs Expanded Example (www.imagef1.net.nz) then look through the Application & System there you will see the times and the actual errors created, you need to open these and copy / paste the WHOLE event / error message back here. Lets have a look at whats causing the freeze.

If you scroll through hopefully there will be a common one, thats the one(s) that will be of a great help.

B back later tonight to see if any progress / resolution

610484 2007-11-11 07:22:00 i sorted it so all the errors are at the top... and there are a few here are some common ones

This is the most common

Source disk
The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block.

Atapi
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

There are others, but they are kind of a bit more random...

hope that info helps, let me know if u need anymore
