612018 2007-11-16 08:25:00 I just started getting the problem this week, last week it was still burning DVDs fine. I've tried so many times but Nero keeps telling me all my DVD-Rs are empty DVD-ROMs.

All I've ever used on this pc is Nero, Alcohol and DVD Decryptor.

I've tried updating the firmware, didn't work. Tried removing the device from device manager, didn't work. Tried removing device, then updating firmware, didn't work. Tried plugging it into 'Primary IDE' in my Asus A8N-E motherboard, didn't even recognise it. Plugged it back into 'Sec IDE', but still doesn't work. I've run out of ideas. The drive still reads discs fine, and I've tried burning with 2 different media, but just keeps thinking its an empty DVD-ROM! Been working fine for a year.

It's a Samsung SH-W08a on winxp pro sp2, asus a8n-e.

612019 2007-11-16 09:04:00 Is this burner on DMA??

Is it on the same IDE connection as anything else and jumpered properly?

And whats it jumpered to? MA SL or CS??

612020 2007-11-16 09:25:00 don't know what DMA is, or any of those other things. But it's on it's own cable, not connected to anything else. Been fine for a year. The only thing I've changed is the CPU, could that have anything to do with it? Vicx (11114)
612021 2007-11-16 09:28:00 Have you tried the disks on other computers?

Are the disks 'finalised' by Nero?

612022 2007-11-16 09:31:00 don't have any other comps to try it on. Discs are all blank DVDs, I never use multisession anyway.

I checked under IDE ATAPI controllers and it says the drive's transfer mode is Ultra DMA 2.

612023 2007-11-17 20:17:00 any help? still can't get it working Vicx (11114)
612024 2007-11-17 20:51:00 I wouldn't be surprised if Alcohol is causing the prob.

It can cause a lot of probs. And conflicts.

612025 2007-11-17 21:21:00 been using these programs for a year, I don't think it's alcohol Vicx (11114)
612026 2007-11-17 21:24:00 First things first, grab a stock standard DVD from the video store or the latest PCWorld Mag and make sure it reads that.

This way you know that its still able to read discs.
Once you've made sure it can read discs, see if it can write to discs (Burn them at 1x or 4x, depending on your writer -- Makes the burn more reliable), and then read them.
If it doesnt read them, try them in another device.

You may also need to swap the media that you use

Can you post the drive make / model?

612027 2007-11-17 21:29:00 Sorry, I see that you posted that it was a Samsung.. try some Imation, Princo or Verbatim discs, but try burning it as slow as you possibly can K :) Chilling_Silence (9)
