611866 2007-11-15 23:57:00 Hi guys,

csrss.exe (Window's process) is CONSTANTLY accessing the drive in my laptop. This forces it to not spin down which drains battery life badly. Thing is, it's only reading two little files.

C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Policies\x86_policy.6.0.Microsof t.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_x-ww_5ddad775\6.0.2600.2982.Policy
C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Manifests\x86_Microsoft.Windows. Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.2600.2982_x-ww_ac3f9c03.Manifest

Over, and over, and over again.

Check this log out:

What are these files, and how can I stop them being accessed so often?

611872 2007-11-16 07:33:00 Has it been on the internet - without a AV ? only takes a second and WHAM- you can get hit. There is a virus by the same name - I'd suggest running a AV / antispyware , free Spyware Doctor in my sig and see if either pick up anything. wainuitech (129)
611873 2007-11-16 19:02:00 I'll grab AVG and do me a scan!

"One way to determine if csrss.exe is a legitimate file besides looking at the date modified is to right click on csrss.exe inside Task Manager and attempt to end process. Because csrss is a critical file, Microsoft should inform you with a message that csrss.exe is a critical system process and end it is not possible."

I cannot end it. Well, if I do, I get a BSOD. (0x0000004f)

The date on csrss.exe is 2004, too. Still, I will scan.

611875 2007-11-18 00:28:00 Have a look at this:
msdn2.microsoft.com

It will explain what it is and at a guess you have installed something that is running in the background, or have a service enabled, which is using the side-by-side feature.

Also NTFS file system is very HDD chatty by nature and is not ideal for notebooks as well.
