613423 2007-11-20 23:18:00 Hi, I'm an amateur with computers and I've come to this community once before for help and learned a lot . This being the only place I know to turn I thought I would come back .

My problem is my CPU usage sometimes goes from ~10% to 100% every 2 seconds . I have no idea what this means nor do I know what CPU usage actually is . This is a problem for me because I play an online game and when this happens, my game freezes up or severely lags every 2 seconds . Sometimes I'll close the game and my screen will go black every 2 seconds, literally .

Can someone tell me why it does this and maybe how I can fix it .

Thank you

613424 2007-11-20 23:23:00 Have u scanned for viruses / malware recently??

Get hijackthis in my sig below. Put it in its own folder, run it, click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste the log here.

We'll see if there's anything that maybe causing it.

Does it only happen during games, or does it happen often / even if you're browsing the net etc?

The CPU could be overheating??

Whats the specs of your system etc? Version of Windows?

613426 2007-11-21 01:31:00 Sounds like some kind of virus/malware, an easy way to find out what's causing the high usage is probably to:

1) open task manager
2) go to 'processes' tab
3) look at CPU column, click on it and sort the programs by CPU usage, highest to lowest
4) watch which program spikes high CPU usage every 2 seconds
5) come back and tell us what the exe is called that is doing so...

613427 2007-11-21 02:25:00 CPU usage should be all or nothing. Anything could be causing it. There is nothing in the occasional processor spike to indicate malware. It says a lot about the state of the average desktop that malware is an automatic guess about the cause of anything unexpected. TGoddard (7263)

what do you mean?

613429 2007-11-21 07:56:00 There is nothing in the occasional processor spike to indicate malware.

Perhaps if it wasn't every 2 seconds, as in this case here.

100% CPU usage every 2 seconds is not normal, and if a legit program is causing it then that program has a problem, or was written by a complete dickhead

I'm just saying malware because it's the more likely answer, for such a symptom. Of course I may be wrong, once we know the filename it should be a lot more obvious I think

613430 2007-11-21 20:55:00 the file is WoW.exe :D
Which is also the game that I play when this happens and it only happens when I play this game

I have Windows XP

1150MB RAM
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

at the moment my CPU usage is spiking from 25% to 40% with a browser and that game open. Sometimes its down to 0% and stays there for awhile.

613431 2007-11-21 21:03:00 Looks like a common prob with other WOW users (www.google.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
613432 2007-11-21 21:35:00 thank you for the link. I'm in the middle of updating my drivers and running a virus scan.

I just noticed with WoW.exe closed my CPU usage is at a minimum of 90%.....The process using 90 - 98% of CPU is AppSvc32.exe

nvm i figured out why this was happening. AppSvc32.exe apparently uses a lot of CPU when you run a scan....lol
