613234 2007-11-20 04:52:00 Fatal exception in interrupt.

This is the next problem in PCLOS.

I had a few troubles so I asked it to Safe Boot..and that's that.

613235 2007-11-20 04:57:00 Does ANYBODY ever get a Linux program to run? SurferJoe46 (51)
613236 2007-11-20 05:04:00 Yup, but Ive never used this. Speedy Gonzales (78)
613237 2007-11-20 05:40:00 Do you have any distros that run on a P4 system?

I keep getting error messages that this is NOT an Athlon processor and it won't work.

I tried all the following:

Puppy
PCLOS
Ubuntu
Kubuntu
Mepis

613239 2007-11-20 05:54:00 If you are getting that error, then you are trying to run a K7/K8 kernel on a P4 system. You should be running a 686 kernel. All of the distros you listed have a 686 kernel available, and will run just fine on a P4.

I've gotta say, you have more problems with Linux than any other user I know - and believe me I've come across quite a few.

Edit: kjaada, that is a troubleshooting guide for OSX, not Linux.

Scared of trying to interpret that info..it's for a Mac puter and I don't know how to even think in those circles...

C/P:

Resolving Kernel Panics

The "You need to restart your computer" alert indicates a kernel panic. This FAQ, based on the "Kernel Panics" chapter of our book Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, provides a set of procedures which should resolve most kernel panics.

Additional information, including how to use and interpret panic logs for troubleshooting, can be found in the "Kernel Panics" chapter of Troubleshooting Mac OS X.

613241 2007-11-20 06:04:00 If you are getting that error, then you are trying to run a K7/K8 kernel on a P4 system . You should be running a 686 kernel .

I'd feel really stupid except that NOWHERE does it say in ANY instructions that you cannot run L-based ops on a P4 system .

I plead guilty of dumbassness if I missed the fine print somewhere . . . .

This is another reason why L isn't more popular . . . it requires too much fore knowledge to make it work . I want PCLOS or at least Ubuntu on my Dell . . I really DO! This cannot be brain surgery . . but maybe I need a resident geek to hold my hand .

To this moment . . I do not understand how or what I did to get Mepis to hold my video and audio library as a server . . but it works and somehow I think it was the cobblers' elves who did it when I was sleeping .

I would like to have a dual-boot system here . . . 2X . . . . .

one with 98SE/PCLOS on a P4,

and another of XP/PCLOS on a P3 . . . that's all!

I'm not messing with any of my Athlons for the time being . . which as far as I can see would be a lot easier .

613242 2007-11-20 06:12:00 Yup, I had Ubuntu and Kubuntu running on a P4.

Altho 7.10 of Kubuntu was worse than the previous version. Programs kept crashing.

Altho the hdd it was on may have been the prob.

Yup it sounds like you dl the wrong version for your processor.

WHAT were the name of the isos u downloaded and installed (or tried to) install for K and Ubuntu??
Speedy Gonzales (78)
613243 2007-11-20 06:27:00 Linux runs on millions of P4's around the world, mine included.

Personally, and don't take this the wrong way, I do not think Linux is for you. An operating system should do what you want it to do without the continual fight you seem to have with installing it.

Moving on, from your other thread the kernel details indicate you are running a kernel for a dual core processor?

PCLinuxOS release 2007 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
Kernal 2.8.18.8.tex5 on a dual=processor i686 / ttyl

The i586 and i686 are also mismatched. Is it safe to assume you actually have a dual CPU computer (not dual boot)?

If you could give us the exact name of the ISO you downloaded and a link to the location, that would be helpful.
