612954 2007-11-19 07:29:00 Well have I got a beaut this time.

My wife has brought home a friends relatively new Acer Aspire 5100 notebook running Vista Home Premium.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t run Vista, because all these programmes load at startup.

WinPCDoctor
Bit Defender
WinAnonymous
Registry Mechanic
Spyware Doctor
WinSecureAv
Security Trouble Shooter

I see it may have had Nortons too because there is still a Symantic Update folder.

The system just locks up and and the TouchPad/Mouse doesn’t load.
Then, for a bonus there isn’t a PS/2 connection on the damn thing so I can’t just add a standard PS/2 Mouse.

I’ve tried starting it in Safe Mode but no different.

I have managed to get to some places I want to go using the arrow keys, Alt+F4 & enter but not being able use the touchpad stifles things somewhat.

How do you technicians get on when the touchpad doesn’t work and there’s no connection for a PS/2 Mouse. There’s USB ports but the drivers aren’t loaded in Safe Mode.

I tried running WinPCDoctor and it reported 8103 errors but couldn’t fix any.

Then I got WinSecureAV to run and it reported a modest 298 Serious Infections.

Ok, they’re possibly looking at each other and giving false positives.

Now, the lady doesn’t think she got a Vista Disk and I notice the HDD is partitioned in two 50gig partitions so I suspect the OS may be on “D” although I can’t see it but it could be hidden.

How would I get to the Repair facility is Vista.

I tried running sfc /scannow but Vista doesn’t seem to have that facility either.

All suggestions would be more than welcome. :D

612955 2007-11-19 07:55:00 Sounds fun! I had an ACER Aspire notebook that wouldn't boot just recently . Trying to avoid reloading the OS from the hidden partition, I spent too many hours .

A critical question - will serious data be lost if you reload the OS? If not, just reload it . Alt-F10 from the splash screen will get it into reload mode (it may take several goes to time it right) . You will also have to rustle up all the program disks for re-installing . Then you will have all the updating to do!!

I recovered all the recoverable data by booting with my BootIt CD and imaging the C: drive and storing the image on the D: drive Then I reloaded from the OS partition .

Someone may come up with an easier solution but at least the above will work . But even if you do get a mouse to work, you will still have a struggle getting all the crap out of it .

All the best for what you decide to do . Let's know what happens .

BAD idea getting this program.

This is rogue software. And what it's telling u is crap.

Uninstall it. Its telling u, u have probs, to lure you into buying it.

When in fact, it doesnt do anything at all.

Get rogueremover, in my sig, its in its database, and let it remove whatever.

Looks like WinPCDoctor is also Rogue software (research.sunbelt-software.com)

Uninstall it.

I would say this is malware too - WinAnonymous

612957 2007-11-19 08:25:00 Thanks Guys,

Yes a reinstall looks the best option and maybe the only one, but I’d still like to try a repair out of interest sake.

If only I could get the touchpad/mouse to work it would be a help.

Exactly Speedy, it’s mostly all rouge software and all of it trying to get on the Internet.

What a shambles. :D

612958 2007-11-19 08:28:00 Connect the hdd on it, to a working system (you'll need an adapter, if it isnt SATA), and scan it.

Thats if you've got a SATA connection on the mobo.

Remove the entries in startup

How do you do that with a Notebook Speedy?

I've tried the Alt+F10 and got into the Acer eRecovery Management Console but as it loads it displays an XP splash screen. All the advertising stickers on the machine say Vista and even the Key Sticker underneath says Vista. Where this XP splash screen comes from is anybody’s guess.

But it gets worse. The Acer eRecovery Management Console requires an "Empowering Technology Password"! Now, googleing has found that default should be six zero’s but this is incorrect when entered. Googleing also suggests that if a password has been set and you don’t know it, you turn the machine off, remove the battery, remove the power lead and hold the Power Button down for 20 seconds and this will reset the password to six zeros.

You guessed it, that doesn’t work either!

She’s an absolute dooozy this one.

What now? I’m not even convinced that the touchpad/mouse not functioning isn’t a hardware fault. I’m only assuming it isn’t because of the state of the operating system.

It hasn’t even got a FDD to try and boot from.

I’m bald, I have no hair left, somebody come to my rescue. :badpc:

612960 2007-11-19 18:10:00 From what you say - sounds like someone who " thought they knew what they were doing" has partitioned the drive, wiped the recovery console and removed Vista and installed XP. Being a newish laptop the drivers for XP may not be available for this model - hence the mouse / touchpad not working.

You may need to get hold of a copy of Vista and reinstall every thing.

612961 2007-11-19 19:11:00 It’s really odd because what is left of the OS on C Drive is definitely Vista .

The XP Splash Screen only comes up when you get to the Alt+F10 recovery suite .

I’ve just spoken to the owner and she assures me that she bought the computer new and it definitely was running Vista . However a friends two boys seem to have done the damage .

She also tells me there are some recovery disks but she just can’t find them . Great!

How the devil do you guy’s do this for a living and not spin out completely? :D

Anyway, it does raise a point that I’d like some advice on also which is is:

How do you make a bootable CD that contains all the vital files and generic drivers to do much the same as a Win98 boot disk?

Given that we no longer seem to have floppy drives (or even PS/2 ports) and everything is USB, It makes it a bit of a trick when your USB ports aren’t available because the drivers haven’t loaded . Then your only chance is to get into the BIOS and make the first boot device the CD ROM and then hope you have a Bootable CD ROM that will have files and drivers to start the computer so you can actually do something .

Can you make one, or buy one, that will boot both XP & Vista?

How do you guy’s do it? :)

612962 2007-11-19 19:39:00 Have you tried Fn + F7 to see if the touchpad is not just turned off? CYaBro (73)

Give it back to her and tell her either to find the CDs or contact Acer and get a new set .

Then bill the kids .
