613004 2007-11-24 04:09:00 Well, she’s going again . :D

My thanks to all those who assisted .

So here’s the wash-up which may help some other poor sod who encounters problems with one of these miscreant machines .

Obtaining the information from Acer as to how to gain entry into the hidden partition was like pulling teeth . First I was advised that the default password was six zero’s . That didn’t work, so I was then advised it was three zero’s, that didn’t work so I was then advised that it was four zero’s, that didn’t work but finally I was advised that the password was the name of the computer . That did work!!

Yes, whatever you called your computer at the time of set-up is the password that it defaults to, if you don’t go to any trouble setting it otherwise at time of set up .

You are now in a position to restore . However, you can’t just reload the OS or any separate drivers, it is a total reinstall . Everything on the “C” drive is wiped so you have to reload all the other programmes you’re running . Wonderful! :groan:

I should also point out that at no stage was I in a position to burn any recovery disks, so if the Hard Disk ever fails the whole lot is gone .

Anyway, the restoration is successful, but blow me down, another couple of nasty surprises .

The Vista Operating system comes bundled with Norton’s Security Suite and Adobe Acrobat 7 . I don’t want to install either, but there’s no choice .

Naturally, they all wanted to call home and check for updates and Adobe took the most convincing that it wasn’t possible because the Internet connection wasn’t set up yet .

Anyway, after a hell of a struggle I managed to un-install them but you never clean up all the mess they leave .

As you’ve probably guessed, I don’t like Acer Aspire 5100’s, I don’t like not having any recovery disks, I don’t like the way the bundle the OS with programmes like NAV, in fact I don’t like anything about the setup at all and if I never see another, it’ll be too soon .

613005 2007-11-24 04:14:00 Good to hear its going again!

I spose the extra crap programs that come with these things, just push the price up.

And most of them are totally hopeless.

613006 2007-11-24 04:36:00 Hey B.M. Thanks for all that info, it will sure to come in handy at some time - copying and pasting to a word doc as soon as I finish typing this.
Hope the person can remember what the PC's called apart from "heap of sh*t" :D

Typical Acer though making you jump through hoops just to get the damn system going again.

Regarding the Norton and Adobe can't you remove them after the system has started and "insisted" on installing all those wonderful apps that you really done want  I got a customers Compaq that used the recovery CD that I had to make from a damaged drive - and it did the same thing  As you may guess - bye bye Nortons

Thanks again for all the great info:thumbs:
