| 612994 | 2007-11-21 20:41:00 | Download it then burn the latest version (www.ubuntu.com) If you're on broadband. Pick a NZ server. Remember to pick the right version for your system. Would Ver 7.04 on the July PC World DVD be OK Speedy? |

Everything looked be loading perfect and then. It didnt have a suitable Video Driver. :angry Its pushing my patience this one. :D |

| 612997 | 2007-11-21 23:04:00 | Well the only other thing u can do, is connect the laptop hdd to a desktop (take it out of the laptop, connect it with an IDE adapter or a sata cable). Depending on WHAT kind of hdd is on the laptop. Hopefully, you've got SATA connections on your mobo. If its SATA. Boot that Ubuntu cd from the desktop. Then go to the laptop hdd, and find that password. |

| 612998 | 2007-11-22 00:20:00 | Why not just download ubuntu 7.10 and fully install it and forget windows ......... only kidding :) By the way 5100 - IDE drive 5104 - SATA |

| 612999 | 2007-11-22 00:21:00 | It sounds like BM is trying to do it on the laptop. But the video or its ram / colours isnt enough for Ubuntu to do anything. Which is why BM should chuck the hdd in a desktop. Ah in that case, BM will need an IDE adapter. And do a scan while its connected. |

| 613000 | 2007-11-22 00:28:00 | It sounds like BM is trying to do it on the laptop. I know .... hence the "I'm kidding". I've just confirmed my Acer 5100 didn't like ubuntu 7.04 either had to reconfigure the display, so big difference between 7.04 and 7.10 which boots fine. |

| 613001 | 2007-11-23 01:53:00 | I agree Speedy I think thats where were at. My main concern is that its still under warranty and Im reluctant to get physical in case I void the warranty. I note also that the left touchpad button is wobbly and probably on its way out. Anyway, a couple of interesting things have come out of the exercise. One is, why did Ubuntu 4 have suitable video drivers when Ubuntu 7 didnt? And what could Acer be thinking when they put the Operating System and Drivers on a hidden partition that theyve encrypted and password protected? Surely the owner that purchased the Notebook along with Operating System and Drivers should be entitled to have reasonable access to their purchase? It seems to me to be completely ludicrous that they would do such a thing especially being a Notebook given their vulnerability to being bumped thumped kicked dropped and generally abused. A HDD failure must be a distinct possibility and then youve no way to replace the operating system. I've sent a couple of E-Mails to Acer explaining the error of their way so we'll see what happens. :D |

| 613002 | 2007-11-23 02:06:00 | One is, why did Ubuntu 4 have suitable video drivers when Ubuntu 7 didn’t? Good question, its more fussy and most probably has more options in it . Than v 4 . 0 And what could Acer be thinking when they put the Operating System and Drivers on a hidden partition that they’ve encrypted and password protected? Most are, if there's a recovery cd/dvd involved . Its most probably hidden coz some people wouldnt know how to select the option, so they can see it / its folders . And so people dont delete it by accident . If they did, well you'll have probs . And its most probably pw protected, so someone cant reformat / reinstall it, if there's nothing wrong with it . Surely the owner that purchased the Notebook along with Operating System and Drivers should be entitled to have reasonable access to their purchase? Thats why most notebooks/laptops have a (or should have) a recovery option . Or a program that can create recovery cd's, or a DVD . In case the system is full of malware . The hidden partition would be like the cd (since it didnt come with a CD) . Which is why its on another partition . Not on the same partition as the OS thats installed . |

Most people have trouble, but never format or totally wreck anything Quote: Originally Posted by B . M . Speedy, you know as well as anyone that if all your eggs are in the same basket and someone drops the basket, youre going without breakfast Its a dog ar . , . stupid, situation and I shall elaborate in a further post . With a little encouragement, our friends at Acer finally told me how to get into the Secret Partition without Ubuntu or some other equally useless programme . Im absolutely filthy on the whole way these pr s like Acer Microsoft Symantic screw us but Ill write another epistle on that later before I get banned . |
