612984 2007-11-20 22:11:00 Good find Speedy - I just confirmed this works on an ACER 5100 (WinXP) and 5104 (Vista).

Booted with Ubuntu 7.10 Live Cd.
Browsed to PQSERVICE hidden partition.
Opened "aimsdrs.dat" with text editor. (in root folder not "tools")
and "password" PD= "____" and "hint" HD="____"
are given and can be edited.

A better help desk than ACERS

Cheers

612986 2007-11-21 18:22:00 Sorry guys, out of town at a funeral yesterday but back on the case today .

Ok, so I dug out my Ubuntu CD Live disk and booted from that .

Now, let me make it clear that the first time I tried Linux I gave up in despair .

I tell you this so you know my knowledge of Ubuntu is probably less than Vista and this is the first time I’ve seen Vista . (So far I have not the slightest urge to upgrade to Vista)

Anyway, the screen came up with two desktop Icons cdrom & ramdisk and on the top taskbar Applications & Computer .

If I choose Computer, I get a number of choices of which Disks is one .

Choosing “Disks” I get the following further choices .

CD-ROM2 (which it doesn’t have) - cloopo (? What’s that) – sada1
Cdrom - ramdisk - filesystem - Network .

Sada1 was my guess but double-clicking on that produced the following message .

Could not mount sada1

Unable to mount the Volume . There is probably no media in the device .
Mount:/dev/sda1/sda1 is not a valid block service .

I’m still a long way from PQSERVICE I fear . And then there is the small matter of editing it . :D

Is it possible that Ubuntu can’t handle the Vista file system?

I’ve had a look at downloading the ultimate Boot disk but I note it’s about 90meg and most of what is on it I already have .

It’s not getting any easier . What now?

612987 2007-11-21 18:53:00 Which version of Ubuntu are you using? - earlier versions are not as easy to use.

I did check it on both Acer Aspire 5100 (with winXP) and
Acer Aspire (With Vista default ntfs file system) / ubuntu 7.10 defaults as follows:

Load Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD
Select <places> - top menu - opens file browser
Select <computer>
Select <PQSERVICE> - mounts hidden partition / volume
Right click <aimdrs.dat>
Open with other application ....
Select "Text Editor"

Hope it works for you.

Regretfully, I can’t seem to find a Ver Number .

It was purchased from Dick Smiths on 6/7/06 and comes as 3 disks Live CD – AMD 64 – Download Collection i386 Installation CD - Stock no . XC4042 .

Other than that I don’t know . I’ve looked in Help but that just wants to connect to the internet and there’s no version number written on any of the disks .

Yes Kjaada, looked in FileSystem but they all seem to be Ubuntu files???

612990 2007-11-21 20:16:00 The version you have will not be ubuntu 7.10 as it is a very recent release however in yr version (whatever) if you can open konqueror which will be in applications, internet .browsers then you should be able to brows Storage Media
and open the hdd files you want

612991 2007-11-21 20:21:00 Download it then burn the latest version (www.ubuntu.com)

If you're on broadband. Pick a NZ server.

Remember to pick the right version for your system.

Noooop, no Konquror in Applications.

Tried the Find facility which opened at /home/warty what ever that is but wasn't there so I searched the root directory and not there either.

What should the command line be to get to Konquror?
