613244 2007-11-20 06:29:00 But any distribution of Linux works on any computer.
This O/S (distro) has all the drivers you need.

Yeah right!

All you need to do is have several partitions and understand how the system works.

Have fun and do not panic.

613245 2007-11-20 07:04:00 You need to read instructions SurferJoe. They suck, but they help tremendously. vinref (6194)
613246 2007-11-20 16:04:00 This is my Quixote moment ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Don_Quixote" target="_blank">simple . wikipedia . org) . . I WILL MAKE THIS WORK, with my dear faithful sidekick Sancho Panza!

Instructions? INSTRUCTIONS?

I love instructions . . but they should not be in preschool Martian!

I took a Home Brain Surgeon License test ($29 . 95, found on the back of a matchbook cover) by mail once and although the subsequent operations were successful, some patients died . So I can follow instructions .

Now . . I am gonna go fishing for a few hours and just NOT think about things L .

Good thing I am retired and can devote all these hours to the pursuit of alternate happinesses .

613247 2007-11-20 17:19:00 One good spin off from all yr problems could be that after you get a faultless install and a working system then, you will have a vast store of remedies for almost any Linux problem (as you have had them all)that you will be able to pass on to others with problems.
I look forward to seeing you helping others in future.

613248 2007-11-20 23:30:00 Want me to teach you how to fish?

I'm pretty good at that...

I'm pretty good at that . . .

After my recent attempt at a Linux MCE box I'll take your bait SJ .

Be commiserated that there are two of us sorry souls in the world who can't get Linux to work . If it helps you at all I also have a very high IQ that has been getting a workout LOL

613251 2007-11-21 03:12:00 An i586 kernel should run happily on a 686 processor; even an i386 kernel should. It just won't take advantage of "advanced features" in the later processor. However, a 686 kernel might crash on a 586 (or 386) processor, because the advanced features don't exist in the earlier processor. :D

The dual processor might be the problem ... but even that "should" not be a problem: a single processor kernel doesn't know how to start the second processor to cause problems.

My preference would be to install from an installation package, not from a Live CD package.

613252 2007-11-21 03:46:00 Not to be rude Joe, but do you have any intention of actually answering the questions we asked earlier in the thread in our attempts to help you, or don't you want the help anymore?

To refresh you the unanswered questions are:

What is the exact name of the ISO you downloaded and can you give us a link to it?

Does your computer actually have a dual core CPU (or HT capable and BIOS activated CPU?)

613253 2007-11-21 04:17:00 Sorry . . I was fishing today and just cleaned the catch . :D Also . . the time/date continuum obviously puts you to sleep whilst I am awake and verse vise-a .

The puter does NOT have a dual core . . . . it is a single P4 on a Foxxcon MOBO . . and I had PCLOS running successfully on it with the same . iso that I am trying to re-install after putting 98SE on the 40g hdd .

It has a single stick of RAM . . 128k, and a 2 . 3g processor . At least that's what I got when I ran aida32 the last time I had a stable system on it .

Believe it or not . . it HAD XP-H running on it when it got here . . but it took 34 . 5 hours to build the sign-on screen . So it went away and I never got the key number for the installation (over-the-counter) and it's now dead, gone, bang . unable to reload or make a recovery disc repair .

OK . . I can get EITHER 98SE or PCLOS running . . one or the other . . but not both .

Somehow I think I have an error in the partitions . . but there's a lot of geek in the names of things and I get lost . I'm old . . don't hit me .

Here's the site of the mirror where I got it: . pclosusers . com/pclosusers/isos/livecd/pclinuxos-2007 . iso" target="_blank">www . pclosusers . com
Here's the site front page: http://www . pclosusers . com/

When I dnldd it, I saved it in my FireFox download manager, found the containing folder and burned it to a cd with ImgBurn as an . iso .

Like I said . . it worked as a stand alone installation . . but it WON'T work when 98SE is in first .

If I load PCLOS first, then 98SE refuses to work and then PCLOS is corrupted too, making it time to fdisk all over again .

Right now I have a dark screen and no activity on that particular computer . . I need to fdisk it, either that or just reinstall 98SE again and start over .

Not too sure that PCLOS/Live will clean the hdd good enuff to make a fresh/clean install with it's wizard format device . . . maybe .
