612942 2007-11-19 08:19:00 you will be able to get the best deal using a site like pricespy.co.nz, essentially lists all sorts of pc components and the cheapest nz retailer for the said component. after buying the parts if you dont want to make your new desktop you can get most shops to do it for you for round $60ish. you will also need to know what parts youll need, basically:

motherboard - i like either gigabyte or asus mobos (gigabyte s3 range are fairly good value)

power supply

cpu - id go for a core 2 duo

graphics card - if budget allows it the nvidia geforce 8800gt is amazing value

a hard drive or two - seagate sata 320gbs are best value for money i think

case - up to you depending what look you like.

monitor - either samsung or viewsonic, personally id go for a samsung

keyboard and mouse - logitech make very good keyboards and mice

ram - prolly 2gbs ddr800 brands like kingston or super talent are good

cd/dvdrw drive - most will do the job your after

operating system - either vista or xp id reccommend

this might go over your budget a bit but should be close enough.

612943 2007-11-19 08:39:00 just added up a rough estimate going on what i reccomended will be about 150-200 more than you budget so if 1500 is your absolute max then go for a cheaper graphics card than the 8800GT and should be right on 1500 LOWTEC (7821)
612944 2007-11-19 20:59:00 if you want to use a store in Hamilton you have 2 main choices, PBtech on angelsea st or Promax ( Tisco ) on Kilarney rd.

Both are quite similar in price.

I'd agree with the reccomendations above, but if budget becomes an issue you can possibly save some money by Going AMD, A 5600+ or 6000+ is still pretty quick and quite cheap, although a bottom end core 2 duo may still be a better choice.

As for Graphics, the 8800 series is the best if you can afford it, but if not consider a 7900GS if it saves you enough, or even a 7600GT as a bottom end ( will still run most current games decently and is fairly cheap )

612946 2007-11-20 07:19:00 I have heard dribble from computer sales-persons that would make a car salesman look like Jesus himself.

Though there are plenty that know their stuff and are honest, They only way to tell is if you also know your stuff, In which case you don't need to be talking to the salesperson.

I have found the bigger the store, The bigger the lies.

How do you think they got big in the first place? ;)

612948 2007-11-20 07:45:00 I say work out exactly what you want here (with the help of PF1 users) and then go shopping with your parts list. We can recommend good stores. Buying locally is a good idea if the shop is a decent one.

You don't want to have to deal with a sub-par business if something goes wrong.

I think they sacrificed 1000 vigins, and in return were given the gift of MASSIVE MARKETING CAMPAIGNS, This weekend only, We have cut our prices to just a few hundred more then everyone else, Plus the quality sucks, And the salesman is telling you lies and tempting you with easy credit so he can make his $6.50 and buy a pie.
