614472 2007-11-24 01:03:00 Got a horrible burning smell in my PC. Can't track down exactly where it is coming from, but I am guessing PSU or Graphic Card.

The hottest things to touch is the PSU and Graphic Card although the PSU is really hot after a few minutes on.

All has been sweet until I added another HDD. Number 8.

Thermaltake Armor case, 3 ATA 133 HDD's and 5 SATA drives running off two Sata controllers. All the HDD's are cool, CPU is cool

Grapics card is an ATi All in Wonder 9700 which I have had for years.

PSU is a Thermaltake 480W

614473 2007-11-24 01:05:00 I wouldnt be surprised if its ready to blow up. I would turn it off, if its still on

How many fans in the case?

Whats running off 2 SATA controllers? 5 SATA's?

614474 2007-11-24 01:10:00 5 Sata's, one empty socket for one more.

Yes it is shut down.

Heaps of fans. 4 x 120cm I think

I suspect it is the PSU, but not exactly sure.

I do a lot of digital Video hence a lot of drive space.

614475 2007-11-24 01:11:00 Hmm so how did you manage to get 5 sata hdd's on 2 sata controllers?

Is the SATA onboard or on a card?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
614476 2007-11-24 01:15:00 Yes a 4 socket Promise card and a 2 socket DSE sata card.

I used to have a Promise ATA133 controller in this box and ran ATA cards, bus slowly switched over to sata. With the ATA133 card plus the motherboard it allowed for 8 Devices.

I currently also got a DVD-DL burner and a CD-Rom also hooked up.

614477 2007-11-24 01:17:00 I would get a bigger PSU if I were you lol Speedy Gonzales (78)
614478 2007-11-24 01:20:00 LOL Yes I emailed Ascent for recomendations as most of the ones there are for PCI-E boards, mine is a bit old for that yet. Except maybe this one which would cover current and the future
www.ascent.co.nz

I think the case has space for 12 drives from memory.

614479 2007-11-24 01:22:00 Bloody hell man, you could run the house off that lol

Shouldnt matter if its got PCI-E connections. Dont use them

614480 2007-11-24 01:27:00 LOL Yes that one is a bit OTT. About 750'ish might do me I think. Bantu (52)
614481 2007-11-25 07:29:00 I put a Thermaltake 750W in Speedy. Burning smell all gone, running sweet again. Bantu (52)
