613747 2007-11-21 20:41:00 I've got a few hundred names and email addresses which I need to insert into a new Excel spreadsheet. Is there an easy way to do this?

The list I'm creating is by copy and paste from stored email messages, which is tiresome already, so I don't want to have to repeat the arduous process.

Thanks for any insights.

613748 2007-11-21 20:47:00 Wouldnt Access be better?

Hmm I see with Office 2007, Access can add addies from Outlook.

Thats if theyre in contacts.

613749 2007-11-21 20:50:00 Fair suggestion, but using Access would be more complex, methinks.

And the data I'm extracting is from my Mozilla Messenger, not Outlook/Express. If it was I reckon, yeah, it'd be simpler.

613750 2007-11-21 22:18:00 The easiest way would be to use a regular expression search & replace (one S&R operation will do the entire list) to format your list into a csv file, which excel understands. You can then open the file directly in excel and save it as whatever format takes your fancy. Erayd (23)

Nevermind, I think you've steered me in the right direction.

Cheers Bletch. I think I'll just go and make me an awesome toasted cheese/tomato sandwich.

613752 2007-11-21 23:08:00 Hi Bletch. I too have more than a passing interest here.... can you expand. Would be very helpful. Thanks. I want to take OE list of several hundred to any sort of database. Scouse (83)
613753 2007-11-21 23:10:00 A couple of useful links for this: Useful Link (www.regular-expressions.info)

Regex is a way of specifying the ultimate pattern-based text search in a single term, and most implementations can also be used to capture and reorganise/reformat text. It's the 'swiss army knife' of text processing.

Many implementations differ slightly, but most use very similar (often identical) syntax. Almost every programming language has a built-in regex engine, and many scripting languages do too. Any half-decent editor will also have a regex engine, although these vary in power and scope. My personal favourite editor is kate (KDE Advanced Text Editor) - among other things, it has a brilliant regex engine, and excellent search & replace tools.

I always recommend writing your regex manually rather than relying on graphical expression builders - I have never seen a good GUI front for building decent expressions; every one I have ever looked at had some serious shortcomings.

Scouse can you not just export your contacts list as a CSV and then import that into excel?

613755 2007-11-22 00:16:00 Greg,

have you tried asking on the mozzillazine forums as this does seem to be one of those that a lot of people would want, so there is possibly an add-on that would do this, (what version of Mozilla messenger is this?)

Have you looked at this (www.fileflash.com)

613756 2007-11-24 11:10:00 Where and how are your E Mails listed. IE? if in Outlook export to a file. Comma delimited or similar. Make sure you tick all sections to ensure all details are exported Then open Excel and import file, check it looks OK, change file delimiters to ensure import will give you the reult you need. Sometimes you need toplay around to get desired result Advocar (1098)
