615145 2007-11-26 01:51:00 Hello all,

I'd like to get my wife and I a laptop. It wont need to be too flash as will mainly be for travelling and using the net.
Wondering what peoples thoughts are on what to buy. Dell seems to be the best spec for $$.
Or should I stick to a cheaper local shop? I don't want anything too slow however...
of course the wife wants the cutest imac in the right colour!

Cheers,

Vic.

615146 2007-11-26 01:54:00 Are you wanting a PC or a Mac? Does it actually matter? Pourhommenz (104)

I'd lean towards a PC, but wife would prefer a mac... but probably doesn't matter. best value for money?

PCs are much, MUCH better value for money.

If you're getting a Dell, do *NOT* get one of their very low-end machines - they are often built poorly and have bad air ventilation. This will, of course, depend on the model you're getting. Spend at least $1500 if you're getting one from Dell. Some Dell models offer different coloured lids (back of screen) on their machines. Colours include red, black, white, yellow, blue, pink, green etc. See their website for details.

The same goes for any lappy from a retail store. Steer well away from anything sub about $1300 (this is for PCs, not Macs). Anything below this is either too lowly spec'd to run anything properly or it uses components/system configurations that are just plain rubbish.

Get at LEAST 1GB of RAM w/Vista. 2GB if you can. Dell offers this as standard on all mid-range machines. Avoid 64-bit. This is not yet developed enough for general consumption by the public. And get Vista Home Premium or above, NOT Home basic. This is just XP with a new skin and a few new features.

One thing I would also look for is the type of touchpad you want. I have seen some HP models (I think they're HP) at DSE's and the touch pad is feels like it's already been used lots - feels somehow greasy and worn down (they're shiny!) Dells do not have this problem as far as I can tell from their website. DO NOT BUY AN ACER. PERIOD.

If I had to buy a laptop right now, I would choose an Asus model.

depends which iMac she wants or if she wants a MacBook which are cheaper again. Incidently the iMac is a desktop, the MacBook is a laptop.
Cheapest iMac is the 20 inch @$1899 which comes with Leopard and iLife software. The Cheapest MacBook is $1,848

They run Windows too.
here are some FAQs to help you out

if she wants a coloured iMac she would be looking at the older G3 iMacs although they are at least 8 years old.

615151 2007-11-26 04:05:00 A friend of mine dragged me out yesterday to find her a lappie to replace her Dell.

She knows nothing about these things, and I know marginally more.

It's only gonna be used for Internet/e-mail/MS Office stuff, so nothing flash was required.

We did the Harvey Norman's / Noel Leemings / DSE thing, and four hours later settled on an ASUS for $999 from DSE that fitted the bill perfectly.

Easy to set up, and she's stoked with her new toy.

AND, eight hours later I even had her convinced not to get Norton's to put on it. We d/loaded Spybot/Adaware/AVG before she had a chance!

615153 2007-11-26 05:55:00 Depending on what your budget is I would recommend an HP 6500 series laptop, available from Dicksmith . They have had very good reviews and I know many who are satisfied with them .

Best advice though I can give you is to look about reviews for the laptop before you buy . A very good place to start is www . notebookreview . com . They have laptop reviews don't by their own members, plus links to reviews done by other publications/websites . They also have a section where people who actually own the laptop can comment on it . Note that these will be American laptops and that their specifications are likely to be a little different from years . Don't worry though we can tell you about specifications, what we can't tell you about is the soundness of the structure, battery life etc (we base it on reputation usually), this website (notebook review) can tell you that .

She's still a bit peeved about it, but that's her hubby's problem! :p
