2007-11-25 21:19:00 | haha god no not vista.......i meant the recovery cds, there no mark on the cable at all, seem like a loose wire or something. i tried linux once.....cant get the sound to work. i tried ubuntu 7.0.4, sound is detected but nothing happens......no its not muted windows uses realtek ac97 hd drivers. The laptop may have come with a hidden recovery partition - if that was wiped when installing Vista then its gone. If you have installed a copy of XP and down loaded the drivers for the Laptop, and all the OS / functions are working then theres no problem with the OS. If you are having a connection problem with a Plug aka the power connector being faulty (loose wire) then that should be covered under the warranty. Warranties usually cover Hardware only - a power adaptor / connection is hardware. If you wanted New recovery CD's then you would more than likely have to contact Acer to purcahse them. But as mentioned above if you have purchased XP and its installed and running - dont bother with the recovery CD's.

2007-11-25 21:50:00 | Did you somehow wipe the second partition, usually D and usually called Data. It can show as empty but in fact the data is still there. I ask this because it can be troublesome sod to delete even if you go to considerable trouble. Just because it doesnt show up like the rest doesnt necessarily mean it isnt there. What messages do you get if you try the Alt F10 trick I described earlier?

2007-11-25 22:09:00 | B.Ms got a point the hidden partition might still be there - check for it. If it is then recover system via ALT F10 (erecovery), and then immediately create recovery CDs. Acer doesn't provide recovery CDs, they provide a method to generate them also part of the erecovery system). Note for ALT F10 to work - you need D2D enabled in the bios, check with F2 during boot. If you decide to go with the WinXP solution and it works, you can create a similar recovery method for future use by using Acronis True Image - it will allow you to create a hidden partition with a copy of you system image and alow you to reload this image during boot as per erecovery.

2007-11-25 22:37:00 | A query in your post hkeyzer is the making of Recovery CDs. That beastly ACER you were helping me with last week never gave me any opportunity to burn any CDs to assist with future reinstallations. Quite what happens if the HDD fails is anyones guess. :groan:

2007-11-25 23:17:00 | nope no recovery partition..only one drive..C:\ using all the haddrive's space. alt+f10 doesnt do anything and d2d is enabled | aidanmaz (7180) | |
2007-11-25 23:25:00 | The only opportunity to create the recovery CDs is in the windows based ACER erecovery application, one of the applications the ACER provides. The application "erecovery" has options to build a factory default CD and Application CD. I don't think is available in the D2D recovery (alt F10 from boot) - I'll check later. Once you've recovered the system (or working from an original setup) the application "erecovery" has options to build a factory default CD and Application CD. The stupid thing is ACER don't tell you this in the quick setup guide but is hidden away in the user manual. It should be placed in the first page of the guide and owners should be highlighted to the fact this needs to be done. (but how many people by a couple of blank CDs with a new laptop? Maybe then more people wouldn't be asking for setup CDs later - a big failing on ACERs part!
