614938 2007-11-25 08:52:00 You could have a look at www.pricespy.co.nz.

They list every retail outlet in the country and compare prices.

Really useful site if you want to buy something for the computer.

614939 2007-11-25 18:43:00 Just because a shop is cheap it doesn't mean you should buy from them. The majority of the cheapest shops on PriceSpy have horrible customer support, if you buy from them chances are you'll be back here in a couple of months bitching about them.

C1 Shoppingmall seem to have a good combination of price and service.

614940 2007-11-25 19:33:00 ok. dose the brand of the card matter? are certain brands of the 8600gts better than other brands?

Of course it does.
ASUS and Gigabyte for instance have 3 year warranties and tend to be more reliable.
Others are crap.

And you really don't want to buy from the cheapest shop. That would be SuperCheap who have a bad reputation for after sales service.

What if something goes wrong? You'd be in for a long drawn out fight on your warranty.

Stick with shops who have a good reputation and don't pick just any brand either.

That GPU is a year old, i'd buy the ATI HD3850 for $100 more and double the performance of the 8600GTS!

Asus have a nice warranty however, most of the cards on the market these days are identical reference design. There is nothing special about Asus or Gigabyte when it comes to the card itself, certainly no quality difference than say Palit or Foxconn if they all use reference coolers.

A great example is the current Asus 8800GT guess who makes it?

Warranty/Price/package is all that matters.
