1420810 2016-05-22 12:28:00 If I installed a game on my new computer, for example Mass Effect.
Then copied the game directory from my old computer and pasted it over the directory in the new computer
and also did the same with the game files that belong in Documents.

Would that result in the same game I had on my old computer along with all patches and mods etc?

Maybe. A lot of the older ones - if NO-CD'ed would work like that.
But with Stema etc now, probably not, too many files in other locations.

Anything by MS won't, they have loads of reg entries.

1420812 2016-05-22 22:27:00 Surely installing it as normal would create all the registry entries needed? DeSade (984)
1420813 2016-05-22 23:09:00 Should work if you have installed it first, some games hide files in unexpected places (to me anyway) and it can take a bit of googling to track them all down. Some games like WoW & Diablo 3 you can just copy the directory and make a new shortcut, only the blizzard launcher needs to be re-installed for those ones and I think it'll happen automatically when you launch one of them.

Steam is actually easy to move as well, you can either install it then copy the old folder over the new one or copy it first then install it to the same location. Either way the games will be on your list when you log in as not installed but will find the local files when you click install and use them instead of re downloading.

The only games I re-install from scratch are usually older games I've not played in ages.

1420814 2016-05-22 23:27:00 Its the mods that concern me.
Certain games I have spent hours modding to be just right and if I had to do it again that would be the death of those games for me which would be a shame.
