1417326 2016-03-11 19:06:00 Friend of mine has been through hell in the last 11 years.
She had a congenital condition and then after labour, her back was trashed.
The short version is, they eventually did fusion surgery on her lumbar back, screwed it up, ripped it out, re-did it, told her they'd need to do her mid back, and upper back later as well.

Over the next 10 years she had 15 surgeries (no further fusion) and has deteriorated hugely.
Until this year they finally stopped buggering around and told her that was it, she could look forward to being in a wheelchair.

She has nerve damage, areas of no feeling, burning sensations, can't walk across a room, can't sit or stand for any length of time, lack of bladder contol, and then couldn't lie down for any length of time either.
Which made for a **** life, she'd alternate, all day, all night....

They dumped all her medications which weren't helping anymore and stuck her on morphine.
They (eventually) decided they could do an epidural on her to help cut the agony, that was - who knows, sometime later this year perhaps?

She got her kiwisaver back, they said she'll never work again. Before this started she had graduated and been head hunted as a programmer and had earned mega money.

She lost that job over the health issues eventually...
She had worked part time for just over minimum wage doing office work for a while, that went too as she became incapable.

She is 38.

She was in the GP the other week and saw an article on Dr Roberta Chow and Low Level Laser Treatment.
This is apparently controversial, and not approved in NZ. Widely used overseas but in NZ it's mainly vets.

She managed to find one:

http://www.atptherapy.co.nz/

Sheer luck - in her area, they are few and far between.
She couldn't see how it could help but having nothing to lose she tried it.

She is over the moon.
Able to walk into a shop now, and out without collapsing. Able to sit in a car for longer than 10 minutes.
Able to sleep.
Able to cut the morphine down heaps.

I'd rung her the other day and got no answer - used to be when she was trying to nap - zonked on morphine.
She rang back and said she'd been walking in the garden -cause she can.

She drove to the river and walked down to see her daughter doing school kayaking the other day - all without the usual pain and incapacity.

She has regained some of the feeling in the dead bits - not all.

She knows it's not a cure, and how long the results last remain to be seen, but she said she doesn't care, she'll go back again when...she said for the first time she has some quality of life again

So any of you people experiencing extreme pain and/or conditions similar...worth a try.
It cost $55 for the first treatment, $40 for any after that. She had 6.

1417327 2016-03-11 19:41:00 I am very pleased for your friend. I hope she continues to improve.

Interesting technology. I will keep it in mind as I am allergic to all NSAIDs.

1417328 2016-03-12 00:43:00 About the same price as chiropractor, so not excessive pain relief. Cicero (40)
1417329 2016-03-12 21:40:00 Perhaps she has a good case for medical cannabis. She needs to see her local MP. Arnie (6624)

1417333 2016-03-13 05:53:00 Costs 920 Euros. Bobh (5192)
1417334 2016-03-13 06:14:00 I am highly skeptical about these things. Their only provable effect is to reduce the amount of money that you have. Having said that if anyone wants to purchase and use them that is fine with me. If the user believes that it gives them a useful reduction in pain as far as they are concerned it is money well spent. It is their money and although I think it is wasted that is really beside the point. CliveM (6007)

There is more than one model, available in NZ.
