1416858 2016-03-04 22:07:00 Party started on a high note, but it fell off a bit. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1416859 2016-03-04 22:43:00 And now I suppose OSH will want to inspect every house in Dunedin to make sure it is “Idiot Proof”.

To think these idiots are our future, or so we are told. :groan:

1416860 2016-03-04 23:00:00 Crowds display the worst cases of human stupidity, too many Idiots in close proximity to each other. Still it's just young people having fun so hopefully everyone recovers ok and learns something from the experience.
Good publicity for the band though, I'd never heard of them before this happened.

gee thats punching a bit low there terry :(

the balconies are made to handle those sorts of loads.
by the looks of whats left it appears to have been very badly built.
shame a lot of people get injured just because a builder took short cuts.

1416862 2016-03-04 23:52:00 They look like 6x2 that protrude from the house but in blowing up the pic something does not look right there as it may have been added on later Or built by the same people that were involved with Cave Creek Lawrence (2987)
1416863 2016-03-04 23:53:00 There was twent people on that balcony. It looks like it was designed for about 4-5. Why blame the builder.

Shades of Cave Creek.

And on another rant, there was a young guy killed jumping off the bridge at Raglan.
Last time I was there there was a big sign on it that said no jumping or diving off this bridge.

1416864 2016-03-05 00:02:00 Whatever, but I don't suppose a cantilevered balcony like that was ever designed to carry 20 odd gormless students all jumping up and down together in time to the music.... it's called forced vibrations.

If they hit resonance then the static load could be multiplied by at least 5.

1416865 2016-03-05 00:12:00 Well if you look at the photos you will see other balconies exactly the same, and wouldn’t you know it, but they’re packed too, watching what was going on. Unbelievable.

However, some reports say that those on the collapsed balcony were jumping up and down.

Well years ago, when soldiers marched, they used to break step crossing bridges so as not to collapse them.

But I guess you can’t expect too much from those who think their Student Loan is for grog.

because balconies are designed to hold the weight of it being full of people. ie if you can fit twenty on it, then it would have been designed to handle twenty people and still have a safety factor.
