1416831 2016-03-04 05:21:00 Hello
I have been a windows/pc guy since the 1980 - Dos and Windows 3.11

I have a friend whose daughter is just starting an arts and design course at polytech.
They use Apple Powerbooks at the course.

She wants to buy her own laptop, she tells me a powerbook is about $1,700.

I told her she could get a fairly decent Windows laptop from $500 to 700.

What do you think.

Is the data comparable these days?

1416833 2016-03-04 05:49:00 Since they all run similar graphics cards it really comes down to screen and how much she wants to be ripped off I guess. gary67 (56)
1416834 2016-03-04 05:55:00 Depends if the software she wants to run is available for both platforms. dugimodo (138)
1416835 2016-03-04 06:01:00 The majority of design programs are cross platform. There are a few that are Mac only. But these are specialised. We are still using Macs at work and have just replaced it ten year old work stations. plod (107)
1416836 2016-03-04 06:21:00 You can't really compare a $500-$700 Windows notebook with a $1700 Macbook.
Maybe in specs but certainly not build quality and materials used.
The windows notebook will be plastic pretty much everywhere, and the number of these that we get in the workshop that have hinges broken, screens wobbly etc is pretty high.
You would have to spend similar money on a Windows notebook to get the same build quality.

Mac definitely, if you want reliability, quality, for sure. No more Windows 10 crap. Apple are pretty much the best thing when it comes to Graphics & Design. ( plus don't have those never ending updates which may or may not stuff up your PC!)

Sorry, Microsoft aficionados, each to his own though when it comes to graphics....

1416838 2016-03-04 07:13:00 The good news is creative suite is now subscription so a license will work on both if you want to change. plod (107)

LL My, My whose one eyed now.

Plese dont go saying MAC's dont break down either, because thats BS, you have no idea how many calls I get from people who own MAC's some almost in tears because repair costs to a MAC can easily cost more than a whole new computer.
One lady I had call once was in tears, she had called every MAC agent in Wellington, all quoted roughly the same price AND to top it off there was a 3 week wait as they had so many busted /failed MAC's - The motherboard in another was over $1000 and it was only a Macbook.

Want an example: one MAC I had to repair had a failing HDD - when getting another I noticed there was one, exactly the same size and spec's for MAC's, almost double the cost --- I called the suppliers and asked why ?? The reply was the MAC hard drives have a chip in them that talks to the cooling system, on some MAC's with out that chip the fans run full speed all the time, the way around it is buy the standard Drive and he gave me a link to some software that tricks the cooling to think it has a MAC drive. Talk about a rip off on MAC's.

Thats exactly what happened, put in a STD hard Drive, put the persons backup on the drive and the fans were going flat out even though the FAN censors were connected, installed the software, and slowed them down.

But hey, Some MAC owners must have $$ to throw away- or like being ripped off ;)

Gary hit the nail on the head in his post above ;)

1416840 2016-03-04 07:52:00 I think there are windows laptops with advanced graphics..
If it was for gaming I recommend one of these but for graphics design is it just an over kill?
