| 1416937 | 2016-04-17 04:46:00 | I see your point. The lesson is that such balconies need to have a much bigger maximum design load, especially in student accommodation, so that even with crowding and jigging up and down the structure is still safe. thats why i can't see why they would have different spec for commercial and residential buildings. the deck use is the same by the same people. especially with cantilevered design which is more reliant of material strength than say a standalone deck. its also not a big thing to fix, just shorten the distance they stick out. trimming off a small amount of deck depth reduces loading at the pivot point by a large amount. |

Would it not be preferable to have tasers mounted independently under the gaps in the floorboards such that at 10% of the safe deflection, (or an ambient 75dB,) the tasers began rhythmically firing straight up for a few seconds? The load, while very briefly indeed increasing, would rapidly decrease and simultaneously the remaining students would be educated in a manner that few other methods could hope to emulate. We might lose the odd student initially, but the balconies would be OK. |

Which in turn begs the question: Why the hell should the rest of us have to adjust our lives to cater for fools? |

| 1416941 | 2016-04-17 07:58:00 | You will have to adjust your wallet a bit. All these idiot proof schemes add up to a fair bit. OSH will no doubt come up with a little mantra, a big book of rules and an enormous scale of fees payable to the officer of the deck. | R2x1 (4628) | ||

Sounds a bit paranoiac to me  So why should the rest of us have to build stronger balconys just because 16/18/20/30/40 or whatever number of fools in Dunedin managed to break one? All the other balconys everywhere are fine, even those on the same complex. If they were collapsing everywhere whilst in normal use then the standard specifications should be looked at, but they simply arent. Now can they please have their Darwin Awards that they worked so hard for? :D |

| 1416943 | 2016-04-17 09:25:00 | All the other balconys everywhere are fine, even those on the same complex . some in the complex where also broken and some had been repaired previously . If they were collapsing everywhere whilst in normal use then the standard specifications should be looked at, but they simply arent . what we don't know is how many are almost collapsing, are they getting pushed to the limit and not know it . do they wait until several aircraft crash before investigating ?? no . they even investigate car crashes from darwin award winning drivers . so why not a house . Now can they please have their Darwin Awards that they worked so hard for? :D not yet ! i would like to see a decent investigation done before handing them the darwin award . |

| 1416944 | 2016-04-17 09:29:00 | So why should the rest of us have to build stronger balcony’s just because 16/18/20/30/40 or whatever number of fools in Dunedin managed to break one? because one day you and your mates might rush out on the balcony to see the fireworks, wedding etc and go crashing to the ground because most people have no idea theres even a weight limit for balconies. |

Well I guess using that logic all 4 person dinghies will have to be increased in size in case 20 idiots were to jump into one and it sank. |

First order of priority is to ensure every domestic couch or settee in NZ be fitted with fire suppressant devices, smoke alarms and clearly marked alternative avenues of egress. |
