1416427 2016-02-24 17:42:00 Used a gourd or an animal bladder to carry their water in. Or probably just drank from wayside streams which were much cleaner before man started polluting them

The very early Africans, the San people, had bottled water. Their bottles were ostrich eggs.

How very today! :)

Depends when.
The romans had pretty good water, after that and before chlorine, what they did was either die of cholera or drink beer.

That's actually how one doc in England figured out cholera came from the water - he mapped the outbreaks and found the brewery had no cases at all, and the pubs with the alkies had no cases.

As we do in my village in Derbyshire and my friend who still lives there has just turned 100.

Mind you, the lead will kill him in the end.

Maybe not, there always seem to be exceptions. My grandfather smoked a pipe his whole life, finally let his family put him in a rest home at 92 where he had constant fights with the staff over his smoking, and proceeded to chase the "young women" in their 70's. Point is good genes and/or a bit of luck and some people survive conditions that kill others.

I can only hope I Inherited some of his resilience, there was certainly nothing in His lifestyle to account for his relatively long healthy life. He smoked, drank, ate whatever he wanted, and never exercised, and yet he out lived several of his own children. Nobody survives life in the end though, it's a temporary condition.

1416432 2016-02-24 21:44:00 I know of 2 men who used to work in a NZ asbestos plant. One lived into his 70's, the other is still alive & healthy.
So using some of the above arguments given above, asbestos is not harmfull . At all. :)

but
100% pure water, is actually quite bad for you.
It will in theory, strip out needed minerals etc on its way through us . Pure water is a solvent .

I have a carbon filter. It gets rid of some of the crap in our tap water. Some, not all.
I fill up my drink bottle with that .
Im sure some of the chemicals in my plastic water bottle leach into the water, but pfft, dont really care that much.
All my daily coffee's from cafe's is unfiltered water Im sure .

Chlorine, that will evaporate away to some extent if the water is left in open air for a bit.
Running the tap for a few secs is a good idea , as that first bit out the tap may have a build up of chlorine : supposedly.

1416433 2016-02-24 21:49:00 I would ask instead ....
Do you buy bottled fizzy drink (coke fanta etc)

surely to god thats more an issue than drinking water . Especially with the NZ fatties population weighing down our health system

Why pick on bottled water.
Do you buy bottled beer. Why is it OK to buy bottled beer but not bottled water ?
Why is it OK to buy 1litre of coke, yet deemed stupid to buy 1/2 litre of bottled water instead ?

Not all NZ tap water is contaminant free .

1416434 2016-02-24 22:35:00 Before bottled water? Tap water for tea , cooking etc. Tap water to drink depended on where we where living at that time. The absolute worst was Onehunga tap water from the Spring St bore. Auckland.. Heavily 'mineralified'. When it was boiled & you made tea with milk it would turn purple. You could not reboil the jug again with out emptying out the existing water.

WE don't buy bottled water per se, but do get local Spring water in 15L containers. Wanganui water taste foul to me & if I have to drink it I put Lime Cordial in it. Sometimes the smell of chlorine makes me gag, sometimes the water is cloudy. Tap water boiled in the jug 'Limes' it up. The Spring water does not. PJ

Which is the reason we fitted a filter here in Waikanae.
