1416841 2016-03-04 08:05:00 Depends if the software she wants to run is available for both platforms.

The Adobe Designers package of Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign has been available for both platforms for about the last 20 years, it is currently available as Adobe CC in an online subscription format. These days the majority of graphic designers use iMacs or Mac Book Pros in some form but if you prefer to use a Windows laptop then do it. Files are supplied to printers as PDFs so the platform they are designed on is irrelevant. Windows can open a Mac PSD or AI file and Mac can open a Windows PSD or AI file.

1416842 2016-03-04 08:10:00 I think there are windows laptops with advanced graphics..
If it was for gaming I recommend one of these but for graphics design is it just an over kill? Re-read CYaBro's Post -- basically if you want quality then you're not going to get it from cheap budget Computers.

One of my customers, her son is doing some graphic Design courses, he uses MAC's at his School, but at home uses Windows based Computers. They cost about the same as a MAC comparison, and according to him there's no real difference, what he does on one can be done on the other.

It's only when you start using specialised software. Both Mac and Windows have exclusives. You can't beat the new iMac s with the 5k monitors for doing graphic work though. So much real estate. Not sure why but apple seem to have bad luck with there hard drive suppliers. plod (107)
1416844 2016-03-04 08:22:00 The other important factor in graphic design and print is colour accuracy which is where Apple monitors are more likely to be colour accurate than PC monitors. Alternatively you can go for a high end Sony monitor and get it colour calibrated regularly for colour accuracy. Webdevguy (17166)

It is good to hear that windows can open mac graphics files and vice versa.

Does the same apply to say Microsoft office files ?

Yes, they always have been able to.

1416847 2016-03-04 20:52:00 Sorry WT, I guess I was was just having a very bad Windows 10 melt down.
Sure Macs have their own problems too I must admit.
Currently have Windows 7 and have no intention of up/down grading to Windows 10 in the near future.

I've also had a number of elderly people come to me almost in tears, because Win 10 installed on their computers without them knowing, and either completely broke it, or they were so frustrated with it that they seriously just want to throw them away.
Maybe if MS could produce something that is much easier for older people to use, then I would be happier to teach it.

Cheers, LL
