616707 2007-11-30 03:54:00 Have Ubuntu 7.10 Gnome on one drive and installed 7.10 KDE on another drive.
The newest install is OK but the Gnome one will not boot.Error is job control turned off.
I feel it is a Bios problem and wonder if a bios reset would fix it without any upset to anything else.

616708 2007-11-30 05:34:00 Post the contents of your .xinitrc file (in your home directory).

What exactly do you mean you by "Have Ubuntu 7.10 Gnome on one drive and installed 7.10 KDE on another drive.". Doesn't sound right somehow...

And how are you starting either one?

616709 2007-11-30 16:00:00 I have Ubuntu with the Gnome desk top on one HDD and with the KDE desktop on another and PCLOS on my other HDD.I had the same conflict when I tried it earlier and did not realise that it was something affected by the 2 &.10 installations. Also NO ubuntu live discs will boot (ie 7.04,7.6 or 7.10) ! fixed it last time by deleting both Ubuntu installs then restting the bios.Wanted a simpler fix this time. kjaada (253)
616710 2007-11-30 23:29:00 The hard drive contents shouldn't affect live CDs  . Why do you have two different installs anyway? You can have both GNOME and KDE installed on one system - you just select the "Session Type" at the login screen. TGoddard (7263)
616711 2007-12-01 00:54:00 I know it should not affect the CD's but it does somehow. No ubuntu live CD or DVD would run.( I have 7.04,7.06 and then 7.10)
Funnily enough other live CDs like PClOS and Suse ran but Klickit and Kubuntu did not.
I had 2 installs as a "try out" not a problem there.I have since seen posts on other forums where people have the same error and it seems it could be a bug in 7.10.
I have now wiped the 2 installs and reinstalled just one.As I said previously,"I reset my bios and all was OK but previous to that kept getting the error "Job control is not switched on"WHEN I TRIED TO ACCESS THE FIRST INSTALLED version.Something is altered in the bios if there are 2 installs of 7.10 on the same box.

616712 2007-12-01 01:03:00 The error you're getting makes it sound like only the kernel is booting, and you're getting dropped to a busybox shell (which is a single-process shell) - usually this is because for whatever reason Linux can't see your root filesystem, or because you have hosed it somehow, or because your initrd is missing or inaccessable.

How new is the system? Sometimes it takes a while for new hardware drivers to make their way into the kernel; this would explain your issue with livecds.

Are you getting any errors about 'ramdisk' or 'initrd', and/or errors about filesystems during boot?

616713 2007-12-01 01:18:00 I have now altered my setup as above and can not repeat to get the errors but I can say,it happened once then I reset the bios and reinstalled ubuntu and all was honky dory then (silly me) I thought I would give the 2 installs another go and it happened again. My main reason for posting was that maybe someone else had the same problem and resetting the bios could help them.My system is about 18months old so is not "new".As you said "something could have been hosed"and it was because of the 2 installs somehow. kjaada (253)
