615860 2007-11-28 10:18:00 So I tried to open an email in OE, I got an error "not enough memory to perform operation"

So I took a screenshot, couldn't load paint to save it

Looking at my task manager I was only usign 840MB (of a possible 1GB, and there's virtual memory also) so I can't see how it was "out of memory"

Either way 840MB is still very high when all I had open was OE and IE7 with 2 tabs, neither of which had any large websites loaded (and IE was using 300MB apparently)

So I closed down IE and OE, the high usage remained, then I looked in task list, iexplore still running but now only using 30MB according to task manager. so I killed it, and memory usaged dropped about 300MB - so: 30MB = 300MB? don't think so somehow...

killed OE (msimn.exe) which was apparently using about 5MB, dropped another 50MB or so.

Virus? I've got NOD32 and several other anti-malware programs running, nothing evil has been detected, I've checked my startups with autoruns, looked at all processes loaded, nothing seems suspicious

Then I've got DEP stepping in closing explorer.exe a lot, also for apparently no reason www.pressf1.co.nz

and I'm getting things like this, which make no sense:
www.imagef1.net.nz

615861 2007-11-28 10:33:00 Is this computer a 64 bit system and using a 64 bit version of Windows?

I would post a hjt log
Speedy Gonzales (78)
615862 2007-11-28 20:57:00 64Bit CPU but running 32 bit XP Home SP2.

ill get the HJT log in a minute, I'm currently in Vista because at least that isn't stuffing up :(

615863 2007-11-28 21:20:00 I would say its a 64 bit issue with DEP.

I would disable DEP as this site says (winhlp.com)

The new DEP (Data Execution Prevention) technology (see special chapter on DEP below for background information) can cause a blue screen stop error with incompatible drivers.

If your computer runs on an AMD Athlon 64, AMD Sempron (mobile), AMD Opteron, or Intel Itanium processor, you may want to disable hardware DEP for a test.

To disable DEP, you have to make a change to the BOOT.INI file in the root of the partition from which the computer boots. To get Windows to run, your only choice is now safe mode. To boot into safe mode, press F8 a few times after the BIOS has finished its booting and Windows begins to load. Once you have booted into safe mode, use these steps:

* Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
* Click on the Advanced tab.
* Click on the third button—settings for system start options.
* Click on the Edit button to edit the boot.ini file.
* Carefully edit the /NoExecute=OptIn string and change it to AlwaysOff. This part at the end of the line should now read: /NoExecute=AlwaysOff
* Save and close the dialog boxes by clicking on OK.

Now reboot and try to get it booted in normal mode again.

If the computer does not even run in safe mode, this probably means that you have a different problem. If you want to try this one nonetheless, either move the hard disk into another computer or try to use the repair console (boot from the Windows XP installation CD and choose the repair console). You can then use the following commands. The BOOT.INI file is write-protected, so you have to remove the read-only attribute first:

* ATTRIB -S -H -R C:\BOOT.INI
* NOTEPAD BOOT.INI
* Carefully edit the /NoExecute=OptIn string and change OptIn to AlwaysOff. This part at the end of the line should now read: /NoExecute=AlwaysOff
* Close the editor and resave the BOOT.INI file back to where it was.
* ATTRIB +S +H +R C:\BOOT.INI

If you use the repair console, you may have to copy BOOT.INI to a diskette, change it on another computer, then copy it back in place.

The second ATTRIB command is not required for booting. It is only a protection measure, which you can also perform later, when you have Windows up and running again.

Be careful not to change any other parts of the boot.ini file, because a mistake can render your computer entirely unbootable.

This procedure had a reported 82% success rate during a one year observation period 2005-2006.

Of course you should now look for updated drivers, install these whenever they appear, and then test the driver by reenabling DEP.

To change this setting back, for example, to test a new driver, you can follow the same procedure again.

* Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
* Click on the Advanced tab.
* Click on the third button—settings for system start options.
* Click on the Edit button to edit the boot.ini file.
* Carefully edit the /NoExecute=AlwaysOff string and change it back to OptIn. This part at the end of the line should now read: /NoExecute=OptIn
* Save and close the dialog boxes by clicking on OK.

615864 2007-11-28 21:24:00 I may try that, but the strange thing is that I have had this install of XP running for a year so far, and prior to this I have never had DEP close explorer.exe before

on a very few occasions it closed other programs, and I think it one case it was actually some kind of virus that got closed, but why would I experience problems with it and explorer.exe now?

Is Nortons Internet Security Suite installed as well??

If it is uninstall it or ZA.

Disable Norton Recycle Bin Protector

I wouldnt be surprised if this is the cause. See if that fixes the crashing with explorer.exe

I know Opera and FF can go stupid sometimes.

I had Opera on this had 1 site open, and it was using 120 something lol

Encarta researcher doesn't run in the background, it does search but only when you tell it to. It's basically for collecting notes and stuff

I used to have NIS2005, now I've got NOD32 and ZA. Wouldn't be surprised if there was still crap related to it in the system

Still have norton systemworks, and ghost, which shouldn't be a problem, as I've had systemworks, ghost and the norton unerase protection running since install (a year ago) - it has saved me several times :D I consider it one of norton's better programs

I can't see how it's any of the programs I've been running, because they're been there for a long time, and never gave trouble before
Agent_24 (57)
615869 2007-11-28 22:01:00 Use the removal tool (service1.symantec.com)

Hopefully, it doesnt kill the other program.

Disable that norton program (systemworks) anyway for now, see what happens

I havent seen any Norton/Symantec program YET that HASNT caused some kind of prob
