615729 2007-11-27 23:26:00 Hi, I was wondering if someone might point me in the right direction with regards to this; PCLinuxOS 2007 seems to have the martian driver but when trying to set up a POTS modem (lucent) it asks for the ltmodem_kernel package and suggests their non free repository - but I cannot find it. Compiling the martian driver from source will allow one to connect through the set up network interface wizard, but it will think it has failed so you can't disconnect, going through kppp it will connect but you cant seem to browse of ping anything on the internet even as root.

Any suggestions would me mightily appreciated.

Thanks.

I assume that your Lucent Agere Modem is an internal one. I have here surplus to requirements an External serial modem that works just fine with PCLinuxOS - well it did last year when I was using 0.93a Big Daddy (the forerunner to 2007). If you are a member of the PCLinuxOS forums, you could send me a PM at my user name there of jimwilk. If it is any use to you, and you would be prepared to pay the postage, you could have it for nothing.
I checked the only non-free repository that I had currently set up and could only find the reference to martian there, which, as you say, is already installed.

BTW, I am dual booting these days between PCLinuxOS and Klikit and enjoy them both.

Jim:)

615731 2007-11-28 19:03:00 Hhel, thanks very much for your kind offer, however I'm a bit of a tinkerer and like to get things working; i.e. I will continue to bang my head against a wall until I figure a solution - even in the face of a viable alternative.

Thanks again though.

615733 2007-11-30 07:28:00 Hmm, thanks for that, maybe it is part of the kernel source package, I will look into it. SaAB (1292)
615734 2007-12-11 20:45:00 Been puttering around with this matter, and ping proved somewhat informative. It was trying to reach an external address over the ethernet interface; removing this interface from within the system management GUI (can't recall what this one is called) saw the modem working perfectly.

Now my problem is why it is doing this. Ethernet adapter is set up with a manual IP address (192.168.113.21, 255.255.255.0), modem is set up with DHCP (or the ppp equivalent if different) (KPPP).

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

615735 2007-12-15 05:33:00 Hi guys, well removing the gateway from the eth0 interface resolved the original problem, though obviously not optimal for anyone wanting to use either interface for internet it is sufficient for my environment. A warning about the init script (martian) in PCLinuxOS 2007, it seems to be badly written (or maybe I just don't get it) - I had to edit a few parts to get it working. But I am now posting from the machine in question. Hoorah.

Thanks.
