615717 2007-11-27 22:07:00 Can anyone advise me the best way to go about converting my pile of LPs, sitting in a box under the pool table, to digital so I can then burn them to CD? A lot of these LPs aren't available these days (some are obscure albums by less popular bands) but there is some great listening on the LPs. And my current stereo system doesn't have a turntable...

Recommendations on hardware, please - turntable, cables etc.

I already have a digital music processing application: Dexster. I should be able to use this to do the actual signal conversion to MP3....

Cheers.

615718 2007-11-27 22:16:00 Can't tell you how, but suggest you do a search here on PF1 as the topic has been brought up a few times over the years. Greg (193)
615719 2007-11-27 22:21:00 Any ideas on keywords, Greg? I did try before I posted, but got far too many irrelevant posts.... johcar (6283)
615720 2007-11-27 22:41:00 All u need is a turntable, hopefully with line out on it.

Depending on what kind of connection its got, the other end of the cable will have to have a 3.5 mm stereo plug on it.

Which goes into line in on the soundcard.

I think other posts say Audacity will do the trick.

Just remember not to turn the volume up while its recording, it'll sound crappy.

615721 2007-11-27 22:46:00 yep i'ts really simple.......i've done it ......used an oldish but ok turntable I had and fed that into the stereo then ran a lead from headphone socket on stereo to the LINE IN socket on the pc.........very simple.....then just play the record and use 'audacity' or a similar program to record it........after recording it you can then use any number of apps to convert it to whatever format you want........ drcspy (146)
615722 2007-11-27 23:01:00 Cheers guys - might talk to my mate at a specialist hi-fi shop - see if I can 'trial' a turntable... :D johcar (6283)
615723 2007-11-27 23:13:00 Sony and Pioneer are good brands. Have owned both - very pleased with the quality.

This (www.trademe.co.nz) is a really good deal.

615724 2007-11-28 00:20:00 I have also done it. Yes you well need a turntable and a ampilfier. You cannot plug your turntable directly into your sound card as the impedence of the turntable is to low so the signal has to be amplified.

Audacity - Free
Goldwave - Free also I think
Adobe Audition - Pro not free but very good
Cubase - Pro - very good - not free.
