615666 2007-11-27 18:03:00 :( hey guyz. I brought a 160G Seagate IDE hard drive about 2 months ago from online trading auction. I installed windows vista home basic, and with 2 Partitions. The main Partition (C Drive) is 20G. And the other Partition(D Drive) is 140G. The reason why the main partition is small because i just want to do install the OS inside the C drive and nothing else. (Just in case for data backups.) The Partition D is has 140g space for gaming, softwares, movies, and a lot of mp3 songs. I never ever download or install any programs in the C Drive because i already said it is OS files. So i have used up about 80G in D Drive and now i still have 60G in my D drive. However, i was trying to install more problems, games, movies, etc. It install on the D drive but when i click on the launch icon or play the movies, the computer gone frozen and sometimes i cannot copy and paste into the D drive and it says like "Hard disk error" I believe that it is a hard drive error or something. It's not a virus because i have scan with AVG free edition and plus Windows Live care to fix Reg,spyware, adware, etc.

So basically i cannot install anything from my D drive anymore even tough i still have 60G hard drive left.

I have done the scandisk to scan error. It scan the (C Drive 20g) with no erros and while it was scanning the (D drive 140G) Half away it was just frozen again. I have no idea what the hell is wrong with my computer. really..
So i really need your help.

thanks

615668 2007-11-27 20:08:00 You need to watch the room on C: if you have left your MyDocuments on C: under your profile.
Move it to D: also if you haven't done so.

Just Cut and Paste it and Windows will alter the necessary reg entries etc.

The other thing to watch is the swapfile. Did you change that to D: or leave it on default C:? Move that too.

615669 2007-11-27 20:12:00 hey drcspy thanks for the link but what does this software do? Is it dangerous?, is this program able to fix my hard drive? Cheers grahic (12930)
615670 2007-11-27 20:17:00 hey pctek, MyDocuments folder is in CD drive. Buy why would i move it to D drive? Is it better? And no i haven't change the d drive or whatsoever. The C drive is in default.

When i got the hard drive. i made 2 partitions. Frist Part is C drive for OS which is in Default and the 2second part is D drive which is for programs, games, etc The reason i made the 2 partitions just to keep my D rive file if my windows file from C drive get an error or something. Cheers

If you right click on 'My Documents, you will see the move button when you select properties, and when used it will ask if you want to move existing files also.

615672 2007-11-27 21:15:00 but why shall i move my My Documents file? grahic (12930)
615673 2007-11-27 21:30:00 Is the 2nd partition hidden? If both partitions are primary, the inactive one will be hidden. If this is the case convert the partition to 'logical' You can use 'Partition Magic' or the 'Windows disk manager'

I suggest you have 3 'logical' partitions. Two large ones for 'programs' & 'Data' and a small one at the end for the swap files which will make Windows faster and not interfere with operations on other partitions.

If you go to my documets/propertys, you will see a dialog to move to a nominated folder. On your 'Data' partition you could create a folder 'my data' and nominate it. Windows will give you the option of transferring any existing files.

Back up your data first.

615674 2007-11-27 21:38:00 Reasons for moving 'My Documents'

1. If your Windows crashes you will lose your documents in C:
You should back up C: with an Image (Acronis) but would not wish to do this on a daily basis. You can just Zip up 'my data' & save it elsewhere.

2. Your system partition would remain small without Data & pagefile in it, so easy to Image or restore.

Wrong advice. With only 1 physical drive the recommended place for the page file is in the same partition as Windows. Any other partition will involve more head seeking to access. There is only one set of heads, only 1 partition can be accessed at any time.

Any decent imaging program will ignore the page file as Windows will recreate it.
