615619 2007-11-27 09:13:00 Well, After getting alot of help from the forums/you guys (Thanks so much btw)

I have (we have lol) decided by my budget .vs. performance I am upgrading this

AMD Sempron 3200+
768 DDR333
ATI X200

To this
AMD64 X2 3800-4200+
2GB DDR400 (Slightly Older Mobo)
GeForce 8600GT 512MB

Now I just need some ideas of which order I should buy them in. Currently I can purchase one now then VERY soon I can get the next 2 parts.

I have decided to get either the processor or video card first, it would seem to be a good idea to get the video card first because I will notice the biggest performance hit with this. But then again I have to get a socket 939 AMD64 X2 (for all I know in 2 weeks they may stop being manufactured)

So guys is it worth getting cpu first or do you think they will keep making socket 939's for a few more months and I should get video card first.

Thanks Heaps...AGAIN Lol.

615620 2007-11-27 09:47:00 Any other ideas besides telling me I should change my mobo because I can't do that I'm not experienced enough to know how to do that properly yet. CaptainVincent (76)
615621 2007-11-27 09:58:00 It doesnt really matter WHAT u buy first.

You still need all 4 (CPU/Ram/Mobo/videocard), so it'll work.

It depends on WHAT you can afford to get now.

If you've got enough money now, get all the parts now, and assemble it.

Coz you're right, by the time you think about it, 939 mobos maybe obsolete

615622 2007-11-27 22:18:00 Yeah, I might get the CPU first. CaptainVincent (76)
615623 2007-11-28 01:53:00 if I remember your previous post correctly you're keeping the old MB?

Anyway it's more or less like this

for games the graphics card will make the most difference ( maybe see RAM comment )

for cpu intensive stuff such as video encoding the CPU is the most important

RAM helps everything, but for diminishing returns as you add more and more. Some games however have a Threshold under which they will never run smoothly no matter what hardware you Run them on - Quake 4 for example needs around 1.5G of RAM before it stops having to use the swap file as you move around the map, causeing the game to stutter or pause as you move into a new area.

Tried Crysis recently, managed to use 98% of my 2G of RAM - had to reduce the settings :(

615624 2007-11-28 03:38:00 Mate, ah, the 939 is obsolete now. It's extremely difficult to find hardware to fit it. And damn expensive. wratterus (105)
615625 2007-11-28 03:55:00 I Can Get AMDX2 4000+ Socket 939 For $139 That Is A Bit Expensive Considering AMD2 Version Is Around $100. CaptainVincent (76)
615626 2007-11-28 05:27:00 changing the CPU will be harder to do, so you may as well do that now and get it over with.

I've still got socket 939, I'm not going to bother with AM2 even. AM2+ or higher next time I do a major upgrade :D
