| 615677 | 2007-11-27 23:08:00 | Wrong advice. With only 1 physical drive the recommended place for the page file is in the same partition as Windows. Any other partition will involve more head seeking to access. There is only one set of heads, only 1 partition can be accessed at any time. Any decent imaging program will ignore the page file as Windows will recreate it.It actually makes more sense to put the swap on a small partition immediately adjacent to the windows partition, and as close to the start of the disk as possible. Storing it in the same partition as windows can result in a fragmented pagefile, which slows down swap speeds badly. Near the windows partition means the heads are slightly closer (less seek time), and near the beginning of the disk means slightly better performance, as IO speeds are better. |

| 615678 | 2007-11-27 23:41:00 | One reason to move MyDocuments is because, by default its where your docs end up. And photos, And stuff. And it gets bigger!!! Suddenly theres no room. Other than what mzee said. |

| 615680 | 2007-11-28 01:07:00 | A brand new 160G Seagate with a warranty is only about $100, why buy off TradeMe? You may have free space but the drive might be damaged especially if it wasn't packed well. There may be a Seagate test tool that runs off a floppy. | PaulD (232) | ||
| 615681 | 2007-11-28 01:11:00 | I installed windows vista home basic, and with 2 Partitions. Since this is a Vista System, how exactly did you run scandisk ? Vista doesn't have Scandisk it has chkdsk, close to the same, but different. Anyway did you try doing it this way - double click on Computer > right click the D: drive>Properties>tools Tab>Check Now Button, when the box opens tick both options Example Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) Then click Start, it will then scan the drive, to scan it needs to actually lock the drive, so hopefully it will pop up with a message saying it needs to do it on next reboot, if so click yes> reboot and it will scan the drive before loading windows. If you want to install the Seagate Seatools which is a drive checker Download Here (download.seagate.com) agree to the terms etc, type in your Email and download / install it. Click on start>All Programs>double click Sea tools Enterpise> run the tool on the D Drive. |

I just didn't know the spelling. yeah i already done the scaning as i press on d drive, properties/tools tan then scan. It reboots my computer and it was scanning the D drive. But in the half way the computer froze again as same as when i install programs or games into the D drive. secondly the Sea tools, what does it do? Does it fix my hard drive or something? Before i download something i usally want to know what it is frist. |

| 615683 | 2007-11-28 04:18:00 | A 160Gb HDD is small. Use it as one partition for Windows, Games, Programs etc and throw in a second drive for My Documents, Photos etc. HDD's are cheap. | Bantu (52) | ||

Out of interest Was this hard Drive advertised as a NEW drive or a second hand ? The reason for asking is you can purchase new Drives for around the $100 . 00 mark . If chkdsk freezes, that could be a faulty sectors - meaning the drives faulty . Did it come with a warranty, in case it is faulty ? Thats a fair enough Comment you put above, Heres what it says on Seagates Site SeaTools for DOS is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine what is preventing you from accessing data on your desktop or notebook computer . It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any non-Seagate disc drive . This is the walk-through for both the old (text) and new (GUI) version The DOS version can boot from a CD and does not run off of windows . Basically it tests the state of the hard drive . Will it Fix It - It may or may not, depending on if it finds anything wrong, or what the fault is . The download link for the ISO that boots from a CD is Here ( . seagate . com/seatools/registration . nsf/eula/desktop" target="_blank">download . seagate . com) The "walk Through" or "DOS tutorial" is Here ( . custhelp . com/cgi-bin/seagate . cfg/php/enduser/std_adp . php?p_faqid=4672&p_created=1189805350&p_sid=Z8hQSQRi&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX" target="_blank">seagate . custhelp . com 3Jvd19jbnQ9NTEsNTEmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY 9JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfb mwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1XYWh0IGRvZXMgc2V hdG9vbCBzZG8*&p_li=&p_topview=1) |
