617382 2007-12-02 08:43:00 Can anyone recommend a firewall for Vista that actually works.

The Vista edition of Zone Alarm refuses to install on my system, it reports a conflict with the .NET framework.
I get two options, ether to ignore or cancel.
If I cancel, the installation aborts.
If I click ignore, then it just freezes the whole system and I have to reset manually.
Either way I'm not winning with Zone Alarm Vista edition.

I have also tried the Vista version of COMODO apparently very highly rated by many reports, but on my system it just broke too many programs.
Webroot Spy Sweeper stopped working but in addition I was unable to write files to my second hard drive and in addition my computer slowed to a crawl.

So I'm still trying to find a firewall the works with Vista and I would appreciate any suggestions. :help:
Thank you.

617383 2007-12-02 08:54:00 Looks like theres a incompatibility list or something inside comodo's directory (Well was with the beta versions of Comodo v3).

Dont know about the release version, but one site says:

Spyware doctor, Spy catcher, Spy blocker, arent compatible with Comodo v3.

I would say Spy sweeper is one of them too.

That maybe why it was slow.

617384 2007-12-02 17:10:00 I just use the standard Windows Firewall on Vista (for almost a year so far), and haven't had any problems. Mind you, I am behind a hardware firewall too. somebody (208)

I'm sure that is the case, since I removed COMODO my system is working properly specifically SpySweeper is working normally and I can again write files to my second hard drive...but I'm still on the lookout for a decent firewall that works with Vista.
From what I read the standard Windows Firewall is pretty useless.
Any suggestions ??

617386 2007-12-03 01:14:00 Have been using standard vista firewall + vista firewall control (free version) This allows normal blocking or allowing of outgoing which is the big minus on the standard version. No trouble with it and it passes all the leak tests. Tried the "new" Comodo just for interest and it completely ruined nearly everything on the computer. Needless to say it's gone and back to firewall control. !!! sphinx-soft.com golfer (6609)
617387 2007-12-03 01:18:00 Are you sure you got the Vista Version ? I have seen problems like yours when the XP version was tried - the free Vista version (www.pcworld.com) of zonealarm is here. Never had any problems with the version supplied in the link - and I have installed it onmany Vista PC's. The Beta did cause a few problems though. wainuitech (129)

I'm interested in Vista Firewall control.

Just two questions:
1] Am I correct in assuming that I leave the regular Vista firewall turned on and just use vista Firewall control in addition?
2] if that is the case, have you noticed any conflicts running two firewalls at the same time or do they work together?

Thanks for your suggestion.

The link that you point to is exactly the version that I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to install.
But to expand on that a little, I used to have Zone Alarm working just fine on my Vista computer, it installed normally and worked properly.
Then I read the glowing report about COMODO PRO and the web site indicated that it was MUCH better than Zone Alarm, so I uninstalled Zone Alarm and installed COMODO PRO V3 for Vista.
From that point everything went South. After much frustration with numerous programs broken, I uninstalled COMODO PRO: but now Zone Alarm will not install. It just hangs after 4% of the files are copied, I get a dialogue box indicating that the program is being initialized but...nothing more the computer just freezes and I have to reset to reboot it and will go no further.
I am open to any suggestions.

617390 2007-12-03 05:01:00 To answer your questions -
1. yes - the inbuilt Vista firewall by default only looks at incomming traffic, by turning on the addition it then looks at outgoing as well. MS say its " to confusing" for he average person to understand any "promps"- thats why the outgoing was turned off This article (www.zdnet.com.au) and many others explains in more detail.
VISTA Firewall Control (www.softpedia.com)

2.NOT advisable to run more than 1 firewall at a time - they usually conflict.

Then I read the glowing report about COMODO PRO and the web site indicated that it was MUCH better than Zone Alarm, so I uninstalled Zone Alarm and installed COMODO PRO V3 for Vista.
It appears that Comodo firewall is NOT Vista ready - seems they have " jumped the gun" Zonealarm was similar untill they got it right - seems as if Comodo has damaged the system, thats why you are now having problems with other programs. As you mentioned it was working OK untill you installed Comodo.

Note: I installed Comodo in a Test PC that doesn't matter if it gets damaged to see what it would do - guess what happened - screwed Vista !
Appears Compodo's Not fully Vista ready Yet - In fact i have read several complaints ( some in this forum as well) that V3 is not playing to nice with XP as well.

The link I gave you to vista firewall control should explain it better than I can. It is not a second firewall but an addition to the vista firewall that monitors outgoing traffic and gives you the option of allowing or refusing. Once you have set your permissions for various programmes it will not trouble you again. These can be altered at any time. In other words it makes vista firewall work like any decent firewall should !! Try it and I'm sure you will not regret it and it's not hog on resources either.
