617283 2007-12-02 04:46:00 Hello

I would just like to ask, how do you go about setting up XP Pro with 2 IP address and 2 gateway?

My situation: I have 2 environments that I need to work in, both operate in a non-DHCP environment, thus everything is static.

What I want is to have XP switch between the 2 IP and gateway addresses automatically.

So far I managed to have the IP address switch automatically but not the gateway address.

==Example==

-Environment A

IP address: 192.168.0.2
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

-Enviornment B
IP address: 10.1.1.2
Gateway: 10.1.1.1

====

What I had done was in 'INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) PROPERTIES' under 'ADVANCED' then under 'IP SETTING' tab, I added both my IP address and gateway address in the appropriate sections. This seem to allow my ip address change automatically but not the gateway.

I have google this problem but all I came across was DHCP related materials/solutions :(

So any suggestions? :)

Thank you

617284 2007-12-02 04:52:00 Whats A connected to??

It would probably have to be connected to a computer, that uses ICS, or you could try changing the gateway / Primary DNS server to the routers 10.1.1.1

Altho, I think the router may only accept ips between 10.1.x.x.x to 10.1.X.X.X

In which case 192.x.x.x wont work.

Or put the ips in manually, (then they should be static, like these are). Well these have to have static ips, if I want to add ports to the router.

I cant add ports otherwise (if theyre not static).

The gateway and Primary DNS would be 10.1.1.1

And if you put the ips on auto the router would probably set both to 10.1.x.x.x or whatever the valid ips are for the router.

Not 192.x.x.x.

-Environment A is where ICS is used.

PC - - - - - -|
PC - - - - Switch - - (a) Gateway PC (b) - - ADSL modem --- internet
PC - - - - - -|
...

All PCs & NIC (a) are in the 192.168.0.x range. While NIC (b) and ADSL modem are in the 10.1.1.x range.

----

-Environment B is you typical home network setup, where all PC including the ADSL modem is connected to a switch.

PC - - - - - -|
PC - - - - Switch - - ADSL modem --- internet
PC - - - - - -|

All PCs and ADSL modem are in the 10.1.1.x range.

Thanks for your quick reply Speedy, I will try altering the DNS and see if I get any results. And yes, the router in both cases only accept the 10.x.x.x range addresses.

617286 2007-12-02 05:21:00 But then, are A and B using the same router??

If both are, I doubt it'll work. Since, the router wont accept the 192.x range.

And if A does use ICS (and is still going thru the router), I dont think it'll work anyway.

Since the router would probably take over, even if ICS is enabled.

Are A and B using 2 different phone lines (which by the sounds of it, you are).

I take it, since A is using ICS it's a PCI ADSL card?

Altho if B has a modem, then A if it uses a modem as well (PCI), it does sound like there's 2 phone lines?

Why have 2 modems?

Is this setup in the same house?? It sounds like it is

Or is B going thru A, if it is, why use 2 modems and 2 switches? You're just making things harder.

617287 2007-12-02 05:45:00 Yes both network are in the same house using the same line. However only one of the environment will be present at any given time. It will either be Environment A or B.

In Environment A, the ICS computer has 2 NICs, one connected to the Local network while the other connected to the external ADSL modem.

No internal modem exist in either Environment A or B.

What I really wanted to do is that setup a gateway computer as a redundant connection/path for the internet. Reason, so traffic can be controlled when low on bandwidth. And during normal times, have the ADSL modem connected to the switch. What I was trying to make/setup was during low bandwidth periods (almost exceeding my cap) all I have to do is boot up the gateway computer and plug in the ADSL modem in the gateway computer instead of the switch. In doing so, I was hoping XP have some sort of feature that can automatically switch between 2 Ips or gateway...

Is this possible?
CCF (6760)
617288 2007-12-02 05:59:00 Well I dont think it is possible.

XP or the router isnt that intelligent, to switch between ips.

I would leave B off, if you want to save bandwidth, and only turn it on, when it needs updating.

I see no point in having 2 switches and 2 modems.

You might as well get a modem/router (with 4 ports, for A, remove the extra NIC in A, and switch), and connect B to the router, and then shut A down and use B when you want to use it. (Or vice-versa)

What would the diff be anyway, whether youre using A or B to connect to the net??

They're still getting billed to the same account arent they?

617289 2007-12-02 06:18:00 I see, if thats the case :( . Oh well .
As for the setup, its all using the same equipments, only 1 switch and 1 modem .

All I did was plugged the modem into a gateway pc, while all other pc are left connected to the switch .

There isnt too much different between setup A and setup B, except for that in setup A, speed can be controlled, thus dragging certain downloading or process longer .

I guess I have to find some other way .

Thanks a lot for your help :D
