616757 2007-12-28 19:57:00 Hi just to let you know I got Ubuntu installed yesterday, I had to install some other program called "deepburner" I am crossing my fingers I tried Sun Solaris 10 (August 2007) it only worked twice and then would not work on the third cold boot up. very good I must say if only I could get internet working.

Just to let you know it has
GIMP 2.4.0.rc3
Open Office 2.3
Firefox 2.0.0.6
Su do ku 2.20.0.1

I was amazed it had my brother printer in their but did not work at first, a few years ago when I had linux interest I had to do something with the CUPP program, then I found my test run in the printer buffer, a quick look at the printer cable showed is was not fully screwed in, as I screwed up the plug the printer sprang into life and printed three page with just "test" on it.

616759 2007-12-28 20:13:00 Hmmm - two problems

1 - If I boot an Acer Aspire 1350, the screen goes blank during the boot of Ubuntu, and never reappears.

2 - Booting a generic DSE PC, I get a login prompt ? username/password

Thanks

presuming you are booting off live linux cd disk

On booting ubuntu press f1 this will give some boot options try the options that refer to vidio card card ie I think one option is "linux = vga"

I think your problem is caused by ubuntu (xserver) not recognizing your video card

I had a go at installing from the PC World disk, Gave up, and spent a few dollars getting a disk that worked from the nice man at Copyleft.co.nz - well worth spending
a little for a lot.
Using ubuntu 7.10 now- it is lovely

616761 2007-12-29 14:04:00 Awesome to hear Oldguy :) Ive been using it on my laptop, heaps nicer than 7.4 :D will upgrade my Desktop / Fileserver after the New Year

Also, nice to see some people correctly addressing it as 7.10, its labelled 7.10 and not 7.1 ;) see here for why:

en.wikipedia.org notes the typo that also refers to the earlier version as 7.4 :p instead of 7.04*

616764 2008-01-03 08:10:00 Wouldnt it have more than 1 file on it?

If Ubuntu is in ISO format, you'll have to copy it (the ISO), to the hdd, and you'll need a cd burner and a program that can burn ISO files.
Yes you are correct. It's a pity PC World didn't say to install the ISO Burner program first as this is nessessary.
I did just that and as I have two Cd's, one a dvd I was able to put a blank Cd in the cd burner and tell ISO Burner to use the Ubuntu 7.1 file on the DVD that was in the dvd drive. All went ok and copied the extracted ISO to the CD which was 'bootable'
I did this first on my slow 'Garage' 900mhz computer and it took forever to make and then it 'bombed out part way through. So the next time I used my main computer and then when the cd booted I used the option to "check' the cd first and it was ok. I recomend using only 16x burn speed in ISO Burner as the 32x speed clapped out half way through.
I installed on 'garage' computer which took quite a while, so take a few beers with you. I now have it running ok and have to now start configuring it to my liking. It looks quite good so time will tell
