617552 2007-12-03 06:49:00 I have 1 HDD on IDE1 Master, 1 HDD on IDE1 Slave, 1 CD/DVD Writer on IDE2 Master, and 1 CD Writer on IDE2 Slave (or something along those lines). Now, I want to add another HDD via SATA. My mobo has the ports and I have purchased the cables I needed from TradeMe.
My problem is, with all the IDE drives plugged in and running, there are no more pugs to plug the SATA power cable into!!! Will I need to buy and install a whole new power supply with extra power connectors or is there some kind of adapter or something that will split one power connector into two??
Any help would be very much appreciated.

617553 2007-12-03 06:53:00 You can buy splitters (www.dse.co.nz)

And these (www.dse.co.nz)

But the pins in these things can lose contact with the sata power adapter.

And when that happens, you'll have to open the case and push them together again.

Its better if the PSU had sata adapters on it.

617554 2007-12-03 06:57:00 Hey Speedy, yeah i have one of those things in the second link you posted. If I plug the black end into my SATA drive, there's no other plug from the PSU to plug into the white end, they're all being used up by the IDE drives. Guess im going to need to buy a splitter huh?
Cheers dude :)

617555 2007-12-03 06:59:00 Yup, buy the 3 way splitter thing .

One end gets plugged into a connector from the PSU .

Then the other 2 (1 goes to the SATA, and the other to whatever the power was connected to before) .

Doesnt leave you much if you want 2 sata's lol .

You'll have to buy 2 3 way splitters .

617556 2007-12-03 08:22:00 Just be careful with splitting too many times.
The Power supply would have been made with the correct amount of power plugs for its wattage and if you go splitting and adding more you could be overloading it.
What wattage is your PSU?

617557 2007-12-03 16:39:00 You can get splitters at likes of Dick Smith. Most of the newer SATA drives use a different Power connector to the IDE drives, but DSE also have adapters for those.

You can also get a PCI SATA card to add extra SATA drives. Promise make them with 4 SATA connectors. I have found when you use one of these cards you have to use that rather than your Motherboard SATA connectors.

I have two SATA cards installed for a maximum of 6 Sata devices, plus still use my 4 IDE devices.

Also when you first hook up a SATA you will have to go into BIOS and set the Drives order and boot order. By default the PC will want to boot off the IDE's first but plugging in the Sata can confuse the BIOS a bit.
