617986 2007-12-04 21:05:00 My MYOB is old but I have never had any problems with it before. MYOB Accounting v8.0

This PC a recent format/reinstall.

MYOB sits in a folder in a backup drive. No need to physically install it again normally.

This and my other machines all run WinXP Pro all with SP2.

When I try to run myob.exe nothing happens. If I try to install it off the CD nothing happens. Neither the Autoplay runs nor does the setup.exe run.

I just copied the MYOB Folder to my other PC's and ran the exe and it worked fine on both.

Why does it not run on this PC?? It used to pre-format/reinstall.
Very strange.

Any ideas?

617987 2007-12-04 21:35:00 Any error message? windowsxp.mvps.org

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command in the registry needs to contain "%1" %*

Try saving this text as fix.reg and moving it to that computer and running it.

Code:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@=""%1" %*"

Usually a sign of a virus where it that registry key in order to re-run itself every time any executable on the system is run.

No, no error messages.

AV and other scans done yesterday.

fix.reg did not solve the problem. But thanks anyway.

Not sure if MYOB 8 is 16 bit or not. It is old so it might be a 16/32 bit problem

All my other programs run fine.

617989 2007-12-04 21:59:00 There was a issue with the older versions of the software not running and conflicting with some of the new dll's in the system32 folder, most of the time the repair installer fixes it

617990 2007-12-04 22:34:00 Nope DeSade, that did not make it run either. I actually had that file backed up here so must have had to use it before for something.

Ran it, rebooted still MYOB will not run on this PC:-(
It might be a missing XP DLL I don't know.

617991 2007-12-04 22:53:00 Well its been tested with SP2 so if your sys32 is repaired and up-to-date its a bit baffling.

Only thing I could suggest is to check the registry for old keys

local machine/software/myob/.......
current user/software/myob.......

Symptom

When you try to launch an application (.exe files), the following error message appears and the program does not run.

Cause

This problem occurs if the .exe file association in the registry is corrupt. This behavior is generally caused by viruses; one of which is SirCam virus, which modifies the .exe file association in registry.
Resolution
Method 1: Fixing the association settings automatically

Download exefix_xp.com utility and save to Desktop. Double-click the file to run it. This utility fixes the exefile association in the registry automatically.

Additional tip: To run the utility silently (without any prompts), use the -silent parameter. Open a Command window (Command.com) and type:

C:\Utilities\exefix_xp.com -silent

Assuming that the exefix_xp.com is placed in the C:\Utilities directory.
Method 2: Fixing the association settings using Registry editor

* Click Start, Run and type Command
* Type the following commands one by one:

cd\windows
regedit

* If Registry Editor opens successfully, then navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command

* Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
* Delete the current value data, and then type:

"%1" %*
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

* Navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

* In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile
* Exit the Registry Editor.

If you're unable to launch Regedit.exe even from Command Prompt, try this:

copy regedit.exe regedit.com
regedit.com

Coreldraw, Photoshop, Outlook, IE etc no problems at all. but i have

DeSade it is not an actual "installed" program so I don't expect to find anything in the registry. Yep just checked. One instance which was just last searched.

It is like a lot of older smaller programs that don't need to be installed. They can just run from the Directory they are in, as MYOB 8 can do. By copying the Entire Directory to another PC it runs just fine on that other PC.

Maybe I have to do my accounting from the other PC for a while:-)

Ah, I was thinking you were trying to run an install .exe off the CD and it didn't like that either.

Whats the difference between this PC and the other PC?
O/S only? File system?
