618362 2007-12-06 04:17:00 I have telstra cable in Christchurch and I can barely ever connect to peers once I'm seeding (although I can upload with very good speed while downloading) which is a big hassle since I use private trackers.

I have a HighSpeed 20G connection.

When I'm seeding I'll often see me connect to a peer for a few seconds then disconnect from them. It's really annoying. :(

618364 2007-12-06 04:23:00 Welcome to Press F1 exilio -

Are you using a router as well ? if you are you may need to set a static IP on the PC and then open a dedicated port in the firewall setttings to allow that particular PC through on the port the torrent program uses.

618365 2007-12-06 04:40:00 @plod: I haven't received any letter like that, although my torrent speeds haven't been bad at all lately, just upload speeds when seeding.

@wainui: My static IP is all set up properly (as far as I'm aware) and also I have windows firewall disabled since I always get the feeling it slows down speeds.

Another problem I have is that with any torrent I'm downloading/seeding I can only connect to a small amount of peers (I have the max number of peers set quite highly) such as 1(7) or 50(500). Is this just because we live in NZ which is far away from these guys?

Thanks for the quick replies as well just by the way. :)

618366 2007-12-06 04:48:00 Hopefully, youre using a decent AV program then.

XP SP2 will also affect P2P, if you're using XP SP2.

618367 2007-12-06 04:52:00 Not all connections will attach to people seeding.

Depending on what torrent program you are using, may depend on the better results if a dedicated port is open.
For example if you use utorrrent, you open the port on your router to match the port utorrent is using.
Example if you have port 1345 in the torrent program and the PC has a static of (what ever you have) , then open the port in the forwarding / vertual servers settings in the router (thats whats on mine any way) I have to open port 433 and set the static IP to allow remote access to my windows home server.
Same thing for torrent programs, some routers block attempts to connect other wise - hench lower connection to peers

618368 2007-12-06 04:52:00 I have NOD32 but I couldn't work out how to make it allow connections through uTorrent which I wanted to use because of its low memory (Azureus worked with it running) so I only use it to scan suspicious files which is rarely. I haven't had a virus despite a good few years of downloading often using torrents but it'll probably come back to bite me some day...

And yes, I have XP SP2, is there a way to fix this interference (I have ubuntu installed on my comp... :p )?

Also sorry, I think I have a modem (hence the Motorola SB5101 Surfboard MODEM written on the thing that makes my internet work :P) and is why I've never been able to work out how to forward my ports.

618369 2007-12-06 04:58:00 Okay - no router :D you wont need port forwarding if using a single PC with no router. wainuitech (129)
618370 2007-12-06 05:07:00 Heh, sorry for that. =p

Another problem/question I have is that I downloaded a bandwidth monitoring tool and even when I have no programmes running that could be using bandwidth my download speed is constant at between 5-15kb/s which is using up bandwidth when I'm not even downloading anything!

618371 2007-12-06 05:09:00 Use this (www.lvllord.de) tool to increase the max TCP connections from 10 to 50 in XP SP2, make sure it patches correctly, as the system file checker will complain that tcpip.sys has been changed. Now go into uTorrent, Click Options --> Preferences --> Advanced. Click on net.max_halfopen, type in 50 and click set. Make sure that under BitTorrent (still in Preferences) that the max global connectons is, say 200, and max connections per torrent is around 150. If you are on a good private tracker with lots of seeds, you will be able to connect to most of them at once, and should get better speeds :D stephen (9719)
