619036 2007-12-08 01:01:00 Has anyone successfully set up a Scanner to share on another PC?

Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner.

My PC is locked down to all but me but it is on most of the time. The rest of the family have their own PC's but sometimes would be handy when they need to scan something that they can do it themselves rather than me doing it.

I tried RemoteScan but it does not seem to want to do the job.

619037 2007-12-08 02:35:00 Somehow, I dont think so.

Might work if you use a USB or a firewire hub. Thats if any of these pcs have a firewire card.

How far are the computers from each other?

619038 2007-12-08 03:10:00 I have tried many times with our brother MF, but can never get the scanner function to work from any PC that it's not directly connected to plod (107)
619039 2007-12-08 18:01:00 Too far apart to run usb cables.

The laptop is currently about 20 metres away and it can see the scanner using RemoteScan, but gives a twain error.

I might spend some time with this software and see if I can overcome the twain error.

619040 2007-12-08 21:48:00 Well, it should work somehow, that scanner is on the supported list for remotescan.

Have you got the server (for the pc thats got the scanner) and client versions (for the PC/s that you want it to scan from) installed?

And what programs are installed on the clients, that you've tried to use the scanner for?

And depending on which version of remotescan you've got , as it says in the manual for the client sw,

Once you have installed a copy of RemoteScan™ Client you will be able to access the scanner connected to the computer where RemoteScan™ Server is installed. (If you are testing RemoteScan with the Free client software, you will only be able to access the scanner located at our offices).

After installing Client copies, users can then access your scanner from within your graphic applications such as Photoshop® or any other application, such as MS Word®, which can import directly from TWAIN compatible devices. .

619041 2007-12-09 09:34:00 It is not necessarily needed to use an extra app such as RemoteScan.

If you r able to share your files/folders stored on your computer with the others in your home network, your scanner (as a shared device connects to ur PC) should be working finely in the same way.

All you got to do is, 1st, in the Control Panel, set your scanner as shared.

Then, go to each of the rest PCs; click "My Network Places"; up to this point here you should see that the shared scanner is visible there. Go right click, and "Set as Default..."

Eventually, after all these have been done, you should be able to access the Scanner by any others in the same subnet.

619042 2007-12-09 09:56:00 If you did all those above, and it still does not do the job it should be doing, consider the following terms:

1. Are all the computers in the network running same OS?
If not, for example, you use 64bit OS while as the others using 32bit, you would need to install both (32/64bit) drivers on your computer to enable the rest of PCs which r running dif OS can access the device you try to share. To do this, again in the Control Panel.

2.Are all computers in your home belong to a same subnet? Are they in same workgroup? Got to make sure all these things.

3. Are the rest of PCs able to access any other shared files on your PC? If no, in most cases, that means you havnt yet given permission to allow them to do so. In another word, if the others do not even have the rights to access to your IP, how could they access the scanner that connected to your computer?

To get rid of this do the following:

1. Right click "My Computer"; -> "Manage"

2. Under "Computer Management", expand "Local Users and Groups"; -> "Users"; then on the right-hand side, go dbl-click "Guest" account, ensure that "Account is disabled" is unticked; -> "OK".

3. Right click "Guest" -> "Set Password...” -> "Process" -> type in "pswd" in this case as an instance.

4. go click "Start"; -> "Run"; type in & run "gpedit.msc"

5. Under "Computer Configuration", expand "Windows Settings", -> "Security Settings", -> "Local Policies", -> "User Rights Assignment". Then on the right hand part, you find "Access this computer from the network"; go dbl-click; "Add User or Group", type in "Guest" -> "OK”.

6.You also find "Deny access to this computer from the network“; go dbl-click; if you see "Guest" is listed here, remove it.

619043 2007-12-09 10:01:00 Now from any other PCs that r in the same subnet, if you go "Start" -> "Run" -> type in & run "\\10.1.1.5" (assume the Scanner is connected to 10.1.1.5"); a window is then poped up asking 4 username & password; type in username "Guest", password "pswd", enter, then all shared files/folders n ur shared scanner would be displayed. lovemedo (13082)
619044 2007-12-09 10:04:00 1 more thing forgot 2 say: you got to ensure you r running at least XP pro on your PC that the scanner connected to, or you will unable to edit the GroupPolicy by running gpedit.msc. lovemedo (13082)
619045 2007-12-09 16:42:00 If you r able to share your files/folders stored on your computer with the others in your home network, your scanner (as a shared device connects to ur PC) should be working finely in the same way .

All you got to do is, 1st, in the Control Panel, set your scanner as shared .

I can Share with Printers and Folders . HOW Is this done with the Scanner?

Control Panel / Scanners and Cameras the scanner does not have a share option .

XP Pro / SP2 on all machines .
