2007-12-09 19:16:00 | In Windows XP Pro (SP2), Explorer has now taken to crashing. The PC will still run pretty much perfectly with the exception that the start menu and task bar and quick launch dissappear. The windows key also stops working, but any other explorer windows remain open and new ones can be launched. How can I start the above explorer session again without a restart? It's only in the last 2 weeks, so I must have loaded some program that has made it unstable sometimes. cheers

2007-12-09 19:24:00 | Press ctrl-alt-del Does task manager open?? And go to start/run. Type regedit. Does this open?? If it does, just close it again. If they dont, you may have something nasty. Let us know.

2007-12-09 22:38:00 | You don't have to wait until Explorer crashes to test if regedit is working. If you have something nasty it won't be working now. | FoxyMX (5) | |
2007-12-09 22:51:00 | I'll let you know about regedit when it crashes next time . Not when it crashes - just when the comp is running As Speedy said, just go to start/run . Type regedit . Does this open?? If it does, just close it again How can I start the above explorer session again without a restart? ctrl-alt-del . . . . click on EXPLORER . EXE to highlight and click End Process Then (still in task manager, top left) click File tab => New Task Type EXPLORER in the "create new task" popup and press ok

2007-12-09 23:48:00 | just to be confusing ctrl-shift-esc brings up the task manager as well. i like to lock my system, so ctrl-alt-del brings up the security box. :D | Cho (12330) | |
2007-12-10 01:19:00 | Regedit fine . Quote: ctrl-alt-del . . . . click on EXPLORER . EXE to highlight and click End Process Then (still in task manager, top left) click File tab => New Task Type EXPLORER in the "create new task" popup and press ok . I tried that before asking on this forum, and sure it opens a new instance of explorer (ie a folder) but it does not restart the "start button" or the task bar (quick launch, clock etc) . When "Windows" says it is closing down explorer, it only closes down the above items . Everything else functions as usual .

Yes, but it does make windows re - display the start menu, task bar etc so quite often when they have dissapeared for whatever reason, by ending the explorer task and restarting it again, the start menu, task bar etc become visable again. |
