619420 2007-12-09 08:12:00 Is your wireless network secured with any WPA / WEP connections?

Cheers :)

619421 2007-12-09 08:22:00 Simple really, dont share any folders / files.

Your laptop may be able to be seen on the network (same workgroup), but if any one tries to access the laptop they will get a "Access Denied" message.

619422 2007-12-09 10:23:00 none with the WPA thing.

Make sure you have no files/folders are shared, and disable the File Share function. Group Policy defaultly disables this especially when you v installed sp2. So even through you v shared sth, other wont be able to access it.

And you can do it in firewall setting as well.

619423 2007-12-09 23:58:00 I am under the impression that his network is not secured in the first place, and therefore people are able to connect to it and in turn 4Lowie is able to view these people's files.

Oh well, there are two sides to everything. :)

619424 2007-12-10 05:24:00 The best idea is to use a decent firewall like ZoneAlarm. dolby digital (5073)

Decent? ZA is crap.

Comodo is far preferable, though I have to admit the new version of ZA is a marked improvement on last years and the year before's.

Get Eset Smart Security. Thats got a brilliant firewall.

This is a rather BIG topic here, you not only have the network settings such as share / file-system / firewall permissions to think about, but also the additional threat of Wireless which should again be encrypted, potentially a hidden SSID, MAC Filtering would be another good start, amongst other things!
What have you done so far in terms of locking your system down?
