619373 2007-12-09 02:51:00 A rather general question but I'd like to get a new hard drive to go with my existing "320Gb Western Digital WD3200KS SATA2" just for storage that is around 250GB preferably and was wanting some recommendations.

I'm wanting to buy one as cheaply as possible :p and am using PriceSpy (www.pricespy.co.nz) but obviously I have concerns over whether I should simply go for the cheapest HD with the capacity I want.

Also I'd like to know if installing a new HD is as simple as plugging it in under my existing one and booting up the computer or if there are only certain types of HDs that work with my comp:

AMD64 3500+
Asus A8N-SLI
GeForce 7600 GT
2GB RAM

Thanks hugely for any help!

EDIT: Maybe instead of capacity I should have said that my price range is around $100 but I'm pretty flexible.
EDIT2: Sorry, I'm a big noob to this but should I also think about external HDs or are the advantages (?) not worth it?

619374 2007-12-09 02:59:00 I think most people would say Seagate.

Might be dearer but more reliable.

Depends if u buy SATA or IDE, if the mobo supports it.

If SATA, connect it to an adapter, the BIOS should pick it up.

And once you format it in Disk management in windows. You can use it.

Same goes for IDE.

You may have to go into the BIOS after installing whatever, as the boot order may change.

(Thanks for the help). :)

Yes.
And I'd be careful who you buy it from off Pricespy.

619377 2007-12-09 03:30:00 Is this (dragonpc.co.nz) a good HD/price?

Also, pctek just for the record, do you have any specific sites that I should stay away from on pricespy?

619378 2007-12-09 04:13:00 If you want cheap get another WD. If you want something better go Seagate SATA, or Seagate ES SATA.

You could always go SCSI but that might be a bit OTT.

Once you get it you could always switch your data to the smaller drive and have the big one for storage.

619380 2007-12-09 05:53:00 When you buy hardware get it from a local supplier.

I use Seagate drives as they have a five year warranty.

At this time I have not had to return a Seagate drive ever!

Get a 250 or 320 Gig SATA2 SEAGATE drive from whomever.

I always buy Seagate, never had a problem. Still have one that is over 5 years old now and never had any reason to doubt it, despite heavy use

You also asked which is better, sata or ide (pata). If your motherboard supports it, go for SATA. For many reasons (slightly faster, thinner cable enables better air circulation etc)
