619358 2007-12-09 02:50:00 Hi, no doubt this question has been asked many times - however, I am looking to buy a laptop. I am moving my desktop to another room and want a laptop for use with my hobby and for the Internet/emails. My budget is flexible. I want good graphics - I have embroidery sewing machines. Lots of RAM - I am impatient! VBG My friend with similar requirements has an Asus. I will be shopping in Hamilton so would also appreciate a recommendation on a good retail outlet which is happy to provide support if needed. I have programmes which don't like Vista - is XP still available new? TIA - Bryden:help: Bryden (4161)
619359 2007-12-09 02:55:00 What's your budget?
The maximum RAM in any laptop is 4GB. Do you use any specialised design software for your embroidery? I am aware that there is some very specialised stuff developed locally.

Is there specific software? does it require xp or vista?

619361 2007-12-09 03:06:00 My budget is "whatever it takes"! I would prefer to pay $3K+ and get a good machine, than spend less and be dissatisfied. The reason I am wary of Vista is that so many peripherals etc. seem to have hassles function within it - my embroidery software will work with Vista but one aspect less well than the rest.... hence if XP was still available I would prefer to run with that.

There are a couple of ASUS models that still have XP.

619363 2007-12-09 04:04:00 Everyone has their own preferences on Laptops. Not sure if they can be ordered with XP or not, I have not tried ordering one of either lately.

You need not be limited by shopping in Hamilton. You can ask and view in Hamilton but can order elsewhere and have it delivered no problem. Look at likes of Harvey Norman they normally have a big range on display, ask questions then buy elsewhere.

Mine would be IBM Thinkpad T-Series
www.lenovo.com
or Toshiba Tecra series

619364 2007-12-09 04:10:00 Hi - The Consumer magazine suggested that support from the likes of DSE, Harvey Norman et al was less than stellar.... so I was hoping someone in this area had a recommendation for a store they had used and received ongoing support. I have used Millenium in the past - might have to revisit... they sell Toshiba I believe.

619365 2007-12-09 04:18:00 I did not mean buy from Harvey Norman, I just suggested looking there as they normally have a good range to LOOK at.

You can also go with a New Zealand manufacturer who will more or less build to order. Check ultra.co.nz Any of the products I have sold of theirs has always had good feedback and good warranty.

1.8GHz duo core processor

Cheers :)

619367 2007-12-09 04:32:00 I think more RAM would be required...

Sorry, I misunderstood the earlier post - thought you meant buy from Harvey Norman etc. Good idea to check them out....
