620071 2007-12-10 23:02:00 Hi
I have a NEC Versa E3100 laptop running on Windows XP SP2. I connect to the internet via a satellite broadband connection (connected by the time the laptop comes on) and usually run on 230v connection. At the moment I am running on the batteries to check their operation, but all seems OK.

My problem is that when I switch on in the morning to bring the laptop out of hibernation, it loads up then immediately goes back into hibernation. The next time I switch on, everything boots OK. It also seems to happen when I switch on after having closed down (switched off) the laptop overnight using the 'Turn off computer' window.

The unit is set up to hibernate when the power switch is is pressed.

This problem began about a month ago and I can't identify any system changes at the time.

I run Counterspy, Avira AntiVir on schedules and regularly clean the registry and check the disk operation. I am running Diskeeper auto defrag settings so the unit is never bogged down.

Anyone got any ideas other than the batteries might be the problem. They indicate 'charging' after the unit is switched on and are at the moment showing 83% after about half an hour of non-mains operation.

Cheers

620072 2007-12-11 04:41:00 Are you sure the battery % is correct?
I would suggest taking ou the battery and using mains

620073 2007-12-11 05:41:00 How old is the laptop ? batteries do have a life span, they may need replacing.

Does the battery ever get drained to almost empty, sometimes you need to almost flatten them, and recharge a few times to break the memory charge some batterys develop.

My 4 year old Lappy did this - wouldn't fully charge and after 3 flattens /recharges - it came right.

620074 2007-12-12 18:08:00 Hi Guys

I am always running on mains for normal operation. Very rarely do I run on batteries.

The batteries seem to be OK! They run for quite a while (hours +), but i will try running them longer to see if I can flatten them. The laptop is only a year old.

620075 2007-12-12 19:35:00 Completely flattening laptop batteries is not a smart idea - it's not good for them. If your battery already lasts for a few hours there is no reason to do this - the only time it's necessary (as Wainuitech said) is if they have problems holding a full charge, in which case it can sometimes help a little.

Whatever you do though, don't leave it in that state. If you flatten it, charge it ASAP.
