620029 2007-12-10 17:45:00 ASUS released a press release yesterday clarifying their position on the yellow “Warranty void if removed” sticker on the bottom of the Eee PC devices that covers the RAM slot. http://www.eeeuser.com/ (I cannot get the ASUS page to load.)

Interesting comments on DIGG, including this one:

"Here in Australia we have a basic right to inspect what we are given, this means we can break all the warranty seals we want, and if the company refuses it on warranty on that alone you report them to the ACCC (Australian consumer and competition commission) and that company gets its ass kicked. if in the process of opening or inspecting you damage the components, then thats your fault (wilful damage), but otherwise they cant do anything. I freely ignore these stickers at will as they literally mean nothing here, just like most EULAs and such, they break local laws (as we have good consumer laws) and therefore you can ignore large swarths of them."

I think there was a discussion about warranty stickers here on PF1 earlier this year, with the same conclusion.

620030 2007-12-10 19:49:00 Very true, the sticker is simply there so the repair people can see if someone has been inside the case. If the sticker is broken then it MAY be a non warranty issue. As stated in the link breaking or removing this kind of seal will NOT void the ASUS Limited Warranty. And theres the Key word "Limited" - usually meaning if parts fail under normal usage.
It doesn't cover some idiot going in the pc and damaging something because they dont know what they are doing.
I have seen motherbords damaged due to the wrong RAM being forced into the slots, why was it forced? because "the guy at the shop said it was the right RAM".

A mate of mine showed me a Graphic card a couple of years ago that someone tried to claim it had failed, and wanted a warranty replacement 6 months old - it was blunty refused - why ? Simple, the card was "snug" in the AGP slot (as they should be) and the person used pliers to grab the card and remove it - DURHHHHH - obvious marks on the card - not really a warranty job.

620031 2007-12-10 20:05:00 According to ASUS's website this is still the warranty conditions for the EEE:

A. Exclusions from this Limited Warranty Service

Asus does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of this product. Any technical or other support provided for the product under warranty, such as assistance via telephone with “how-to” questions and those regarding product setup and information, will be provided without warranties of any kind. The warranty only covers failures or malfunctions occurred during the warranty period and in normal use conditions, as well as for any material or workmanship defect. The warranty will not apply if:

(a) the product has been tampered, repaired and/or modified by non-authorized personnel;

(c) the warranty seals have been broken or altered;

620032 2007-12-10 21:07:00 ASUS wishes to assure its customers that merely breaking or removing this kind of seal will not void the ASUS Limited Warranty.

Not that it matters, we here know the sticker thing is just there to stop people who don't know what they are doing from messing about.

Swapping RAM and so on doesn't void anything. Breaking it while swapping RAM would.

My own warranty statement just says basically, physical damage caused by user or users mates is not covered.
